Perhaps you've never had a problem with Gearwrench's thin metal plate retained by a snap ring but, unfortunately, I've had a couple take swan dives off of a raised lift arm, and explode when they hit the ground, shooting their guts in several directions. Granted, it might be a fluke but I'm more careful where i leave stuff now
Besides, Gearwrench doesn't offer ratchets in these lengths so, there's no reason to debate which is better since Gearwrench doesn't offer a 12 inch long 1/4 drive comfort grip ratchet, nor a 20 inch long 3/8 drive comfort grip ratchet, nor a 25 inch long 1/2 drive comfort grip ratchet. Feel free to use whatever ratchet you prefer but, just because you don't like the ratchet I choose, doesn't make my choice wrong. :fawk:
When that happens, I d rather asking for a new replacement gear wrench than keep swinging a capri with a big scar

Gearwrench's penchant for self switching put their ratchets on my "Do Not Buy" list.
I hear you. That is why I think Project Farm rating switching pressure is BS. Its agregating at hell to feed a long handled ratchet down in a tight space and be clicking away only to have it switch directions on you. I gave my 12" gear wrench to a coworker I didn't like very much after it did it a few time to me changing a ball screw out one evening.

I have a bunch of the GW 90T and haven't had any issues with them locking up or switching directions; but they're also all only 6 months old or less. I think they're a great ratchet for the $, and they have an excellent selection. I'm not aware of any other non-tool truck brand, readily available in the US, that offers a selection matching GW; they seem to be second to Snap On and Matco. I never closely looked at Mac's selection, but I did look at Proto, and they had very few 90T offerings, and their prices were insane- may as well buy Snap On new on Ebay. I had high hopes for the SK LP90, but the one I ordered locked up constantly and I returned it within a few days of receiving it.

I don't have a lift, so it's uncommon for me to drop a hand tool more than 3', so I haven't had any of the GW ratchets fly apart. Or any ratchet at all come apart from dropping it  To possibly prevent this, you might want to orient the retaining ring so that the ears are fully enclosed in the machined groove- basically 180* from the open portion. Retaining rings are unbelievably strong, a 1" ring will hold something insane like 10,000 lbf axial at failure, but they are also intended to be used in 360* grooves, making an unplanned escape highly unlikely. In an application like a ratchet, the main benefit of a retaining ring is ease and speed of assembly; they can even be installed with automated machines in a few seconds.

So far, I really like the Capri 90T design and hope they make them in a large selection of lengths, with flex and fixed heads, like Gearwrench.

We can all hope so since Tekton isn't stepping up to the plate. One thing you can count on is that ASTRO will never offer comfort grip handles on ratchets as Chris Pettit HATES THEM! Their small head size but long ratchets are quite nice (particularly the 1/4" one) and I have them all but the handles are too small in diameter for by big hands. I suggested comfort grip handles to Chris and when flame shot out of the earpiece of my telephone I took that as a NO GO.
Astro small head sizes really matters in work?
They are smaller than regular compact and low profile head?

Different design from their 72 tooth series ratchets. Same floating pawl design as found on their 90 tooth standard length comfort grip ratchets released a month or two ago. The last thing I need is another ratchet but, the 12 inch long 1/4 drive is calling to me. The 20 inch 3/8 seems probably too long to me, and I already have the long fixed head 1/2 drive model in Tekton trim.
Agreed with you they are too long,I think 7/12/15 is perfect for 1/4,3/8 and 1/2?
1/4 need 12 inch? Where will you use them

IDK, but I can kinda remember a few instances in and around HVAC that a long - but strong - 1/4" drive ratchet might've come in handy. Especially with a super short socket. I ended up taking a long ratcheting box with a socket adapter in the end for those times then retired and never used it.

And comfort grip tends to add more bulk right when you need less bulk. Heat shrink tubing is my friend!

I want one. I grenaded my cheap PT long 1/4 (sheared the anvil). It was pretty good to work with, good reach, fairly comfortable. I like comfort grips, but to each their own. With as tight as some engine bays get these days, a long 1/4 drive comes in handy.
