Sorry but 90% of these so called garages are not a garage. A garage is a building in back of the house or next to the alley and holds 1-2 cars and a lawn mower. When you have to hire cranes and concrete pumps than I say you need a new category.

What you describe is a "shop". There isn't a shopjournal.com, so we come here. Personally I have both. Haven't got around to fixing up the garage yet.

Garage or shop, 6 in one, 1/2 dozen in the other. Both are used for the same purpose with the same tools with the same ideas.

I got 960 sq/ft - next to the alley, behind the house, has 2 cars in there and sometimes a mower. I'm all good.

I'm going to have a 30' x 20' garage/workshop at the bottom of the garden next to the alley. 3 cars will live in it plus all my spares and tools. Garden equipment etc will stay in the garden, a garage is no place for such things.

Here we go again.....

...so where do we stop on the garage/shop thing? I've got a two car attached garage that doubles as my mechanics shop. I've also got a 16 X 24 portable building (the barn) that has all my woodworking stuff.

A garage/shop is what you make of it. Some people can afford to have a HUGE one and some of us work out of the back of the pickup. Yes, I'm envious of the guys with a huge shop and vehicle stackers and lifts but it's their money.

One car garage myself. Found myself wondering where I was going to mount my vise. Almost mounted it to my truck bumper as no room. But on GJ there are a lot of good ideas to help space wise. I built a bench to maximize available space.

Also, once you have a massive garage/shop you never will go back. Having a small garage forces me to only work on a single project at once (probably a good idea). But I don't have room for cool stuff like engine hoist/car lift. My next house will be out in the country, and trust me, I will be looking for a place with nice pole barn or a awesome garage.

Cheers!

Cheers!

I ended up doing this with my vise, base is a chunk of frame from an old dump truck , braces from the end of an old oil tank, an old piece of pipe and some plate for the mount.
Total investment
Wheels, ball bearing steel center for lawn mower. 12 bucks
Paint, 6 bucks

With the vise it weighs 130 lbs but it rolls around very easy.
The wheels are just off the floor until you tip it back.
After having used this I wont be putting a vise on my bench any time soon.

Now back on to the topic of garage vs shop. Mines 32x32 with 16 foot ceilings 16000 glorious cubic feet of projects , junk , tools ect ect. Ive been building it now for 5 years still unfinished. But I love these garages / shops that are done to the nines. and someday mine will be one of them!

I agree. I started with a two car attached and quickly moved on to a detached two car with 30x409, then two 40x60's. Now I have a two car garage, a one car garage and a 40 x 96 shop. Unfortunately there's never enough inside space. Still have a few that lay around outside.

I call mine a shop, to me a garage is where you park the car. But there are super nice and functional versions of both on here. Not to mention all the ideals its like a think tank for guys with tool fetishes
