New Chapman Manufacturing "Stubbies"

I've had a few Chapman sets over the years and also own a W.F.M.C. bit set. While I hate the Chapman ratchet, I like the Chapman bit handles and extensions. However one area that these sets do not excel in is confined area work.

Chapman Manufacturing has come up with a unique idea. They take bits and extensions that have "in spec" working ends but bad ball detents and/or number stamping and press them into a plastic "stubbie" handle.

They currently offer slotted, phillips, hex, Robertson, Torx, 1/4" square drive and extension stubbies. (See photos.) I ordered a few tonight, it will add more utility to my Chapman sets.

The "stubbies" are available on a different Chapman site: http://www.chapmanmfgspecials.com

MAtco used to sell a five piece set of super short plastic handles. You could press a bit in using a vise.

I think I have some from HF. Someone gave them to me, so I'm not sure, but they're much shorter than those and actually used one yesterday to remove a screw on the carb of my Harley. They're the red and clear ones standing upright. Barely 1" long. I do like to support Chapman tools though seeing we're both from the same state.

After talking with Chapman today it sounds like that is what they are doing - pressing the part into the plastic handle.

Biomed was nice enough to send me the link to his post, so now that I'm here if anyone has questions about the stubbies or any of the other tools we make let me know!

I love their neat yellow cases. The kit comes with a cool little "midget ratchet" and a spinner handle.

I've had Chapman kits since 1976-77. I use them for gun work.

I did not initially realize that once these "stubbies" are gone, they're gone. I'm hoping that sales are strong enough so Joel will consider adding these to the product line on a permanent basis. Also, folks should know that there is no warranty.

I like these although really wish they would offer them in the J.I.S. screw style.
Motorcycles have all kinds of tight spots these will work in.
Motoretro

Doubt you will see Chapman J.I.S. as they do not offer J.I.S. bits.

(In a few posts someone will chime in that it isn't called J.I.S. anymore. :D )

Yes, I'm aware they don't offer it..... yet. I've spoke to Joel @ Chapman a couple times when ordering items and have mentioned they should offer it. Hopefully it come to fruition some day. As I'm old school, it will always be J.I.S. to me.
Motoretro

Hi, I'm determined to make those J.I.S bits, I know there is quite the demand for them! You'll get a newsletter as soon as we have them.

Seems like a great use for what could be waste product. Turning it into a salable product is the best idea actually.

Sirs at Chapman, is it possible to get your product in the Mexican market through a national brand like Truper or Urrea?
Outlets exist nationwide, and there are few products like yours.

Re Mexican market, you can order through our website and we'll ship to nearly anywhere in the world (except Russia, North Korea, etc). I actually just partnered with a new shipping company that provides a shipping at a pretty reasonable rate.

Believe me I would love to sell through a national brand, the trouble is not a lot of national brands want to carry our tools because our limited product line. They prefer to buy from companies who have hundreds/thousands of products. However, I appreciate the recommendation and will see if I can get in touch with someone from those companies. Thanks!

good to see ya joel.

i did some pics and reviews of my chapman stuff over at the gazette last year. i hope joel does not mind me showing them, but he sent me some prototypes for my my arsenal. these are set up with an insert just like the large handles. i find them quite useful. there is enough room to store on in my gunsmith driver set and i find them quite handy.

Some of my sets are missing the ratchets... I need to see if I can order the missing parts to complete my older chapman/xcelite sets.

i think most parts can be purchased separately. the exception may be some limited run sets or limited production parts. i know i missed out on extension a while back that was only available for a limited time.

maybe if i ask joel nice he could hook me up as i know they sometimes have onesy twosey's laying around that don't make the website.

The two in the photo are EXACTLY what I want. The stubbie with the blue handle does not exist on the Chapman Specials site and the stubbie with the red handle is out of stock.

That's them.

I just bought one of those mini screwdrivers for .25 it's tiny that's for sure. I have a Chapman hex bit set an it's okay but the ratchet broke the hex split I wonder if they warranty them I've spoke to the CEO once about a custom green set and about offering them to the public she was supposed to have her son moc some up.

other than color, they are exactly the same. the red handle just has a short extension placed in it. both are prototypes given to me after a couple large purchases and several visits along with a review done at the gazette.

i am rather a purist and was hoping for a black stubby handle that matches the standard size handle if and when they go into full production. i would also hope for a true stubby rather than the more medium size currently offered but maybe they are in store as well.

i have not called to visit with joel in a while to see what is up. it may be in order!;)

You can definitely get those separately from Chapman. Their individual parts are surprisingly low-priced too!

Hi guys, here's a couple things to clarify:

1. The short ext. 3" OAL length stubbies are back in stock on chapmanmfgspecials.com For some reason it took me a week and a half to realize that since everyone wants the shorter ext stubby, we can just cut the long exts on the lathe! DUH
2. I lowered the price on the #17 1/4" slotted & 5MM hex stubbies to $1 each. Orders of 6+ still ship free USA
2. We sell everything open stock, bits start at $1.30 each
3. Regarding the split ratchet: our ratchets are rated at 200" lbs, which can be exceeded if you really lean on it. If it's split it sounds like that's what happened, they're available for $6.50 on our website (keep in mind these are USA made & hand assembled/inspected). However, we do warranty against material/workmanship defects. If you'd like to send it in we will inspect it and if there's any doubt that it was a defect, we'll send you a new one immediately.

Thanks for all the love on here!

Glad to hear our tools have provided you with 40 years of service!

I still have my first set that came in the red covered metal case, along with a couple of the yellow cases.

WOW, that set looks like it's in great condition! Do you remember when you bought the set? We used that case manufacturer from sometime in the 60's-ish to the late 80's when they went out of business. The red boxes were actually jewelry boxes. Do you remember when you bought the set?

I have a couple like that in my display case, as well as some even older sets that were packaged in eyeglass cases.

I won it as a door prize at a gun club meeting. 1976-79 is my best recollection.

Is there an order point at which the bits ship free? I usually try to buy replacements at gun shows from a dealer who has lots of inventory, but that sometimes means waiting several months.
