New compressor, old compressor, or second compressor?

Currently I have a 60 gallon Kobalt air compressor rated for 10 cfm.

I'm looking to get at least 15, but the more the merrier.

There's an Ingersoll Rand T30 242 5C1 for sale near me. Asking $1550. Should be at least 15 cfm. The pump is newly rebuilt. Has a new Balder 5hp motor and a new Square D starter. Tank size is unknown

For a new option, Chicago Pneumatic RCP-C581VS 80 gallons, 5hp, 18cfm. $1800.

Second option would be add another Kobalt compressor for $500. This would give me 120 gallons of tank and 20 cfm.

There are also many questionable used "industrial" compressors for $400 on the local Craigslist. Most seem to have 5hp motors on them.

Also if I upgrade my old one will be for sale if any central Indiana members are interested in first dibs.

If you have the space, seems like a second compressor is the best option for the money.

Well the used compressor options are almost all horizontal, so a second 60 gallon vertical wouldn't take that much more room. Space is a concern, but I have found I can make more space as needed.

I would lean towards adding a second compressor. It's far and away the cheapest option. It gives you the ability to run at lower output some of the time and gives you a back up just in case a problem happens. It's also much cheaper. Just be sure to install valves so you can selectively shut either tank off from the air lines.

Just make sure they don't start at the same time. When running this should be easy, set the cut in and off pressures to be slightly off from one another. If/when you cold start make sure they aren't started at the same time. That might be more inrush current than your electrical system would be happy with. I'm not an electrician, I don't know the details of your electrical setup but I've vaguely heard of this being an issue.

Lowes is about to run the 11% instant rebate for returning customer deal. I think I may go pick up the coupon today in case I decide the second Kobalt compressor is the best idea.

I also need to go double check my electrical situation. Its been a hot minute and I'm not 100% sure what I can handle electrically still. I believe the original setup was 40 amps planned for an air compressor.
