I plan moving sometimes this summer so this really threw me off! My AC's compressor went out on a 10 yr old AC & AC man said compressor would by about a grand & for a couple of grand I could have a new outside unit BUT before he got away from the house the couple thousand had grown to $3500.. Mind YOU he didn't even go into the house but said condenser would have to be replaced because it wouldn't be compatable with new unit! Well my buddy called his buddy(an AC/Heatin MAN) & he said he could beat that price but the unit probably was obsolete & he probably couldn't find a compressor. Now my question is, Would a 10 yr old Ruud 4 ton 12 SEER AC units compressor be outdated & the whole AC need replacing? Does that sound right. BTW, It's an ole double wide Trailer & I Will not get my money back out of installing the AC unit. I live in Southeast Texas, so I really need a AC. Thanks for any advise!

Roho I am a huge advocate against replacing compressors . HOWEVER in your case I would say thats the way to go as you said its a mobile home you wont get the money back out in a couple of months you would put into bringing the system up to 13 SEER its already 12 SEER and I can guarantee the compressor is available. The truth is the guy who quoted you doesnt want to hassle with a compressor change and will make more money getting you to upgrade and be done in the same amount of time .

you just have to install a TXV, thermal expansion valve the the indoor unit. its basically an adjustable orifice per say, remove the old orifice ond install the txv, and you get an r-22 out-door condencer. r-22 is the old type of refrigerant. the new unit would be like said a 13 seer, the old is a 10. to get a ball park price look through the internet. Look on your old unit for the size, a residential condenser isnt anymore than a grand, but depends on the size.

Just change the compressor with one that is the same capacity, All the compressor manufacturers can give you that info. R-22 compressors are still readily available. The line configuration might not match but a little bit of repiping won't cost that much. The system ran for 10 years the way it was and it will run for another 10 with a proper compressor change.

Hello, I spent the 1st nite in AC w/my NEW COMPRESSOR! Finally found a AC man that didn't understand what local AC companys were talking about! 1st thing he done was get model # & serial # & check on availablty of compressor! Not only was it available, it was still under warrenty... SO I got New compressor, some parts & labor for a bit over 5 hundred.... & he had to make 2 trips OUT HERE IN THE COUNTRY TO INSTALL IT! I live 22 miles from town! I think I come out smelling like a rose! Thanks for all info!

Excellent.

Man, the guy who replaced your compressor deserves your support. I'd offer to be a reference ... and help send him referrals in any way I could.
