image.jpgI went to start installing the j-channel that I bought to trim out the windows and I started realizing it won’t cover any more of the metal siding that I’m going to install, so I started wondering if trimming them out with the j-channel will do any more than add an aesthetically pleasing look? I’m a 1 man team building my own house so the less work for me the better.

Not sure. J channel may provide another level of leak protection keeping water away from flange and flashing though.

image.jpgWell it looks like it would make quite a bit of difference as it turns out. I didn’t get enough coffee this morning before I had asked this. The j channel is more shallow than the window so it does hide the metal cut better.image.jpg

Unrelated....but would advise to roll out your flashing tape with a roller prior to siding around it

Those gaps between the flashing tape and weather barrier can help funnel water to the nail fin and into the rough opening.

A basic J roller like this:

Will help ensure full adhesion and proper "wet out" of the tape. That tape is butyl based so it's not as picky about proper wet out pressure as acrylic tapes are but still want to get full contact between tape and substrate, especially on the edges

Thanks for the tip I appreciate that. I’ll be rolling out the seams before installing the j channel. When I installed that tape it was the dead of summer and hot so it all seemed to stick nicely but now that it’s getting cold here in Ohio I’m noticing some areas pulling away. Thanks again!

Your siding should go IN the channel, not under it

I just pulled the window up and yes it is listed as nailing fin with j-channel.

I have used protecto flashing tape before, that stuff blows. the adhesive level is poor, and you're lucky if it sticks. Many better grade flashing tapes on the market today.
