Hi all, I just joined the site recently after seeing the amount of great info shared. As it so happens, I am in the middle of building a 24 x 24 1.5 story detached garage. It is framed and sheeted (mostly), and has rough openings for 9x7 doors (2). I was wondering specifically about the fascia. The rafters are 2 x 6's spaced 24" oc. I was trying to figure out what size to use, 2x6 or 2x8. It's getting vinyl siding, so these will be covered either way. I have to cut the rafter off at the bottom to use 2x6 fascia, but my house has that exact setup with the bottoms cut off. I also wondered what you guys thought about preformed fascia covers, they have aluminum in 6 and 8 in, vinyl in 8 in from what I have seen. Thanks for any input. I have attached a pic that shows before the front was framed up. Thanks!

Thanks for the reply.

I don't agree....8" is going to look pretty clumsy IMO.

My house is from the 50's....has 24" eves...and the facia is 1x4....when I look at some of the newer houses where they used 2x6's, I just cringe...I think it just looks clunky....

About the only advantage to 2x6 or 2x8 is fire...heavy lumber like that takes longer to catch fire.

When they built my daughters house, I noted that they used a 2x6 for the rafter tail facia. The house was then trimmed out with a Masonite facia and soffit, like all the houses around. I'd have to measure, but it's about 6" on the facia and maybe 12" on the soffit.
