I'm in the planning process of building a new house and a detached shop....my concern at the moment is getting power to the building site....which is about 600'....wanted a minimum 200 amp service and maybe a 400...my question is how much should i expect the cost to be to run that underground....ballpark of course...

Will vary wildly, no way to predict without talking to the power company.

Decide what you want and where the power will end up at the meter. The POCO can save them and you some time and money by running the feed, if underground, to a temporary meter and panel near the construction and coiling up enough wire to make it to the final location. They may not want to do this with the scrappers out in force, IDK about that, but it used to be commonly done that way.

No one can predict because POCO's are so different from one place to the next. It could be free, or it could be 10 grand.

Charles is right ,your first call has to be to the POCO.They will tell you what they will allow and provide and to what location and how much it will cost you.Nobody other than your closest neighbour that had a new service installed recently could ballpark it,POCO costs, rules and requirements change on an almost daily basis, make sure their planner puts it in writing.
