Technically, though, those Canadian-sold Taiwanese ratchets aren't fine tooths, they are/were the equivalent of the raised panel ratchets sold in US Sears.

They are FAR from anything close to fine tooth ratchets.

Limited stampings on them.
I have 3 sets of 1/4 to 1/2 bought new in teh 80's I keep around.

They're supposed to give you a thin profile ratchet if you exchange a fine tooth. I work there, it's right in our list of which ratchets to exchange for which.

I'm late to this thread. I have a 1/4 RHFT whose gears are getting really worn/sloppy. If I take this to sears will they put a new gear kit in it? I'm not really willing to trade it in, even for a new thin profile since it was a hand me down ratchet from dad.

Bring it to the store and ask them if they have any rebuild kits for it. A knowledgeable employee might know where to look. Some stores have a better stock of rebuild kits than others. I lucked out a couple of years ago with the 1/4" RHFT. They just handed me the rebuild kit!

Also those ratchets were badged as Easco, KD, Armstrong and perhaps another brand. If you contact Armstrong you might be able to find a kit.

Yes, they are.

The Taiwanese ratchets have the same specs as the USA made.

Round head.
45 teeth.
Spinner knob on head.

Unless the famous RHFT had some sort of double-click action giving "90" teeth, then the ratchets are functionally the same. 45 teeth and an 8* swing arc. If/when mine breaks, I'm certainly going to expect Sears to give me an equal or better replacement. If it broke today, I'd expect to get a 60-tooth "Next Generation" thin profile ratchet.... which would still be inferior in my eyes because I just love the **** out of the speeder wheel on this ratchet. If they try to give me a POS 36-tooth raised panel rat, there will be a problem.

Im really late to the thread but here is my oppinion.

The new RP ratchets from c-man are junk. Just about every ratchet from them untill you get to the slimline or the premium are junk. I would look elsewhere you can do alot better. The new rp ratchets are kinda junky and have a plastic direction lever.

So again if you want anything that resembles quality from c-man go with the slimline or premium. they are clones of matco ratchets. The slimline of course having the QR that I have a love hate relationship with. and the premiums being standard type but with 84teeth. I own both and either one is a good ratchet for starting out but the premium grade ratchet is almost something to behold.

Since those ratchets weren't sold in the US, they weren't sold with the US Craftsman warranty, so, officially, Sears could tell you to pound sand, and not be violating the warranty, since you didn't buy them with the same warranty that comes with the raised panel or other ratchets, so, yeah, there would be a problem.

Are they ever going to come out with a flex head premium ratchet? That would blow any of their competition out of the water- assuming that it's priced competitively and actually sold in the stores. I have yet to see a premium grade ratchet on the store shelves!

Most companies charge a lot more and you wouldn't get anything for a worn out tool, wear not covered. I have a recent raisd panel set bought at Ace for $10, and it does feel cheap, but a USA made 3/8 socket set, lifetime warranted for $10? I wish Sears would require receipt. I have other rp sets from just a few years ago, not metal lever either, and they are fine. One set is 1/4" and the sockets have an almost nickel plated look, very attractive. that set is very nice, the ratchet is smooth and I just used it for a car repair, carefully, I like it so much.

What can you expect, Sears is doing a very good job with this cheap dumped goods mess, considering others are going out of business.

Got to agree, just wrote about this in another thread, sears has shot themselves in the foot with the whole tool thing. This thread is living proof.
