new craftsman sockets

I was thinking of buying them last month. It was like 13-15 bucks for a set of just the sockets (no ratchet). I forgot how many pieces, maybe 10. I should've bought it just to try out at that price. I might have to go check them out again and see if it's still the same price. I'm sure it's just one of those gimmick tools like a dogbone wrench, but I'd like to have them in my box to see if they'll actually get rounded off bolts off when needed.

Just to clarify, are these the imported ones in the industrial/oxide finish or are you asking about something different? I have no experience with any of the newer black oxide socket stuff, but curious if I you're talking about the same thing.
I was about to buy the metric socket set this week, but I decided on Kobalta metric multi fit wrenches for $9 down from like $45.
I was hesitant when I noticed Hex bolts seem to have to much room in them, so then I noticed at LOWES AND SEARS, both the plastic and metal hex bolt you can sample it on, were starting to round.
Very gimmicky

yea I think someone at sears Hq noticed that you could "Drive" any fastener with a spline socket. Maybe they are good for the home mech who does like 2 repairs on his car or whatever a year but not for the pro mechanic.
I was at sears the other day looking at the sockets and had to listen to the stupid commercial they had playing "man I cant find any of the right sockets" "They you should try the new craftsman multi fit!" I was disgusted and wanted to yell at the tv BUY HANSEN TRAYS AND ACTUALLY ORGANIZE YOU DRAWER AND DONT BUY IMPORTED JUNK!

They are in fact spline. I will say they are nice spline sockets as well. Great for rounded bolts or actual spline. Much better than my Mac kit. As far as the ratchet goes...who knows...who cares!
I use 'em occasionally at home, and for an imported tool they aren't bad. The sockets have been in my box for over a year and haven't rusted; the wrenches have though. Seems kinda odd to me.
I mostly use them as a last resort before getting a twist socket out, and they actually do work a good 80% of the time or so, on some pretty mucked up fasteners too.
For the money, I'd saying keeping a set isn't a bad idea.

Yup! That's all I'm even considering a set for, rounded fasteners. For that cheap a price, I'd try them out and see if they work well. If it does, it beats hammering on one of my good sockets to get on to a fastener that is rounded off due to Northeastern conditions, or a ******* mechanic rounding it off before with a wrong size socket lol.
But for the price, I'd definitely get a set for work for the very occasional use. If they completely ****, I'll throw them in my home box and probably forget about them

They have thier place if made well, but I don;t see C'man as the pinnacle of spline so the fastners used upon are mainly junkyard fodder for me.
I'd be leery of them, for the simple fact that I've seen them hanging on pegs in the store with rust already setting in.
Obie's post makes me wonder how he's had such good luck with them not rusting yet. Hope they stay that way.
I just don't see how anyone could make a spline socket that is anywhere near as strong as a 6 (or even 12) point. Don't think I'd trust using them with any other drive tool other than the one that comes in that set (if even that.)

These black ratchets and spline sockets are made in Taiwan, not China. Well, they were Taiwan the last time I looked at them a few months ago.
They came out about a year ago, well before the Chinese Craftsman ratchets.
My boss has been using the Wurth branded 3/8 and 1/2" spline drive sockets as his main sets for three years running now. He runs a heavy equiptment repair shop so this is not light work.
The 10mm sockets of both kits have been replaced but all the bigger ones are holding just fine. I tried a set and went back to standard type sockets due to the 'feel' of the play bothering me. He is content and will stay with the spline drive. At least the german made ones are apt for pro use, I can't see the Sears offering not being apt for a weekend warrior or as a backup set for damaged bolts.

I checked mine again last night, and I guess I must have oiled them and forgotten about it or something. Even with an uninsulated, unheated garage in winter they still show zero rust. And even the spread of rust on my wrenches has stopped. Or, maybe its the hundred bags or so of dessicant I rotate monthly. Uline has a great price on them and they can be baked and reused.
