The top ones have been made forever (maybe not forever but I have a few from the late 70s).

The torxes I have seen for atleast a couple of months but they still could be new.

I know the regulars have been around forever but the Phillips are I think are "new" in the sense, that the handle is a big handle.... the Torx, I believe are definitely new... I could be wrong... wouldn't be the first time! :)

These are the ones, I remember being around forever but they have the "stubby" handle...

Sears did that awhile back (as in more than a few years ago) when they came out with the pro screwdrivers. However, I think they've discontinued it in stores already.

The super stubbies are actually useful in removing some trim and modules where need a little more torque and the grip of a regular sized handle is needed but, you don't have room for a full sized screwdriver. I've used the torx set more than once.

I went out and compared handles and that handle was as big or bigger than the first gen snappy hard grip, and the mac hard handle. Also becuase its round it seems fill up my hand much better than that stupid SO handle.

Er... in reference to what, exactly?

Also, if they've been discontinied, the Cman pro stubby screwdrivers can still be found in at least the 10 piece set.

Re: New Craftsman "Super Stubby" Screwdriver sets: Phillips, Regular and Torx!

Those ROCK.
Several years ago, Craftsman had plain blaze orange handled screwdrivers in their Dollar Bins for a long time. I put together a complete set for my junk yard/travel box--the idea being the blaze orange handles would be harder to lose.
One of the screwdrivers was a stubby blade with full-size handle.
I also have a straight and Phillips blade in the black handled Profession series.

They distribute a ton more torque, and will bust loose fasteners that the regular stubby can't do, and I also contend they'll bust loose fasteners a regular-length screwdriver won't do. I don't know if it's because the longer shaft flexes, you can't get a truly square bite on the fastener because of the distance away, or what, but my full-handled stubbies are the most used screwdriver in the box. I think they chew up less screw heads as well, because you are able to apply the torque much closer to the work area, and you can control the contact of the blade and head much better. In fact, I've seen it time and again where a regular length screw driver won't bust a fastener loose, but the short blade with the full-sized handle makes short work of it. (I've taken apart a LOT of old cars with them)

I highly recommend these. For the money, get yourself a set and see if you don't agree.

You work for Sears, wow, what tools don't you take back, you know the one's people don't deserve replacement for, so to speak.:bounce:I will pick up the above mentioned, perfect for rear mounted distributor caps.

I don't refuse much warranty items; unless they are not lifetime warranty (torque wrenches, power tools etc.), if there is a issue... I just talk to the Hardware dept. manager and see if we can do something! If you get refused warranty service; call the customer service hotline, we have had good results for people...

I have not bought any tools at Sears for about a year. The last ones I bought the 1/2 inch drive extensions would not go into the sockets unless I used a deadblow hammer to drive them in, then they wouldn't come off well,of course, returned them and got the same duds. The newer ratchets seem sloppy, lever pops to wrong direction too easy, not enough spring tension, took ratchet apart and saw why, hole for spring oblong, too big. Then they got cute and said the warranty for their tools was not for professional mechanics!!!!I said they don't say that so tough. Anyway what the heck happened to Sears?????With all the BS with the big tool companies, I wish Sears could still be counted on.:(

Re: New Craftsman "Super Stubby" Screwdriver sets: Phillips, Regular and Torx!

The tool quality has gone done quite a bit; Danaher's quality control has dropped off quite a bit as well... ever since Kmart bought out Sears I have a sneaking suspicion they have pressured Danaher to lower production costs/quality. I have no way to prove this or is it Danaher's fault; many here say its not Danaher's problem but they are just making the tools to Sears specifications.... I'm not convinced Sears has much to do with design and production of the tools themselves at this point.... I think it is like so many companies today, simply re-badged other people's tools. What came first the chicken or the egg; who knows! The QC is issues are up quite a bit; you should see some of the stuff that comes in; flaking chrome on ratchets, bad sanding/grinding, edges that are really sharp, course grinding/"finishing" areas on the tools, rough/painful surface "chroming", ratchet heads that are missing buttons.... I could go on for days.... ultimately, it doesn't matter who is to blame, the quality is down and I find them unacceptable! My goal now is replace everything with pro used tools (with special attention to snapon in particular but also, mac, matco, cornwell etc.) that I find affordably at my local pawn shops, flea markets and garage sales... end of rant!

The ratchet quality on some models really took a nose dive when Danaher started shifting production away from the Moore Drop Forging plant in Springfield MA. You can read a little about the closing of MDF here:

Does Snap-on offer this style screwdriver anymore ? I did not see anything on the web site and searching the part # shows the item as not available.

Re: New Craftsman "Super Stubby" Screwdriver sets: Phillips, Regular and Torx!

I just bought the last set of super stubby screwdrivers at one of my Sears. They seem like they will be a big help. I know I'm always looking for a short #2 phillips when I do an oil change and have to unscrew those annoying plastic screws that secure the oil drain access panel under the engine. These seem small enough to work really well. They are no longer listed on sears.com so I assume they are discontinued?

Re: New Craftsman "Super Stubby" Screwdriver sets: Phillips, Regular and Torx!

I picked up the torx set a couple months ago, but the phillips/slotted set is always out of stock at the Sears stores in my area. Hopefully, they did not discontinue the set.

I too cannot stand stubby drivers with the tiny little handles. Sometimes they are all that will work, but I try to avoid them at all costs. The 1/4'' ratchet/bit socket always comes out first.

I have the straight/phillips set. They rock. Its nice to have drivers with real handles without the long and longer blades that seem to be standard.

I did have to return the first set as it had two P1s, one marked as a P2...

That's too bad, those were one of the better things they introduced in the last few years. Glad I got a couple of sets when I did

If they are discontinued, I guess if I have any problems with them I will be getting a standard length replacement? I'd probably push them to give me stubby professional screwdriver as that would be a better match. If I see any more of these I'll pick them up and post them here.

I have the Craftsman 1/4" slotted stubby as depicted above. I use that screwdriver all the time. I don't remember exactly when, where, or why I bought it. For some reason, I think I've seen that same screwdriver for sale at my local Sears store within the last couple months. So, it may still be available.

They're not completely discontinued....yet. Some random sizes have been put on clearance and I have personally noticed that some other sizes are slow to restock.

However, the stubby ones pictured above were cleared out a year to a year and a half ago.
