I saw this in an APP on my iPad,

dewalt-geroscopic-screwdriver-3-450x305.jpg

Seems like it might be handy, but might also be annoying if one were having to shift their hand around to reach a difficult fastener.

I played around with one at lowes and it seemed pretty nice. I have been looking to get a new screwdriver and was debating between this one and the Ryobi 4v since it was half the price.

Just picked up the Home Depot black Friday special version of this tool for $39 as part of the $150 off tool sale.

This is the DCF682. I'm thinking this is a classic case of Garage Journal-itis, where I have been sucked into buying a tool I never knew I needed or wanted. Why in the world do I need a gyroscopic screwdriver, and what the heck does that even mean?

Well after seeing some reviews I thought it looked worth considering, but not for the prices I was seeing. So when I saw it for $39 and I needed a cheap cordless tool for the $150 promotion to work I decided to give it shot.

After playing with this thing for a bit I can definitely see the potential. It's designed for electricians and other tradesmen who need a compact cordless screwdriver that's super handy. And for that I think it fits the bill. The function is crazy intuitive, as you angle your wrist the speed adjusts to match, so it's like a real screwdriver only better because you don't need to turn it, you just pretend to turn it and the tool does all the work.

Anyway, I think this is a keeper. For fiddly fasteners which are all too common in my life this seems like a great solution. Has anyone had more time with this type of tool and willing the share their thoughts?

Thanks!

I tried to use a $50 item to get the $150 off the $399 set - did not work at my store..

I have one and really don't hate it but I don't like it as much as my Milwaukee/AEG/Panasonic 2.6V screwdriver which I think set the standard for these types of tools.

I have one and love it for outlet covers and appliance work. The light is super bright and lasts well too.

If that new one would bend into a pistol grip and had normal buttons on it instead of the gyro I would definitely buy one. It is a little smaller than the original one and it much cheaper!

Milwaukee still makes the old, EXCELLENT, powered screwdriver now with lithium batteries so slightly higher volt rating.

Thanks for the feedback.

After testing this tool a bit more I think it's still worthy of consideration, although it does take some getting used to and might be one of the more specialized drivers I own.

For driving fasteners into wood I think I prefer a pistol grip driver, although this seems to have enough power for soft wood / shorter fasteners.

This tool appears more for suited machine screws and pre-drilled fasteners, like assembly work. With the gyro function I do like the straight handle, it seems like it would be awkward to be twisting a pistol grip around.

Anyway, for some of the suggested applications like interior trim work, outlet covers and the like I can imagine this driver having advantages. Whether it's more convenient than traditional small drivers I'm not sure.

I definitely liked my little 4v Ryobi Tek4 driver for light duty work. After I gave this driver to my dad (he needed something like this), I switched over to a Milwaukee 12v screwdriver for this type of work and it's fine, although a little bulky. I was considering the Milwaukee 4v driver but that is a little pricey for my needs.

Anyway, for $40 I will probably hang onto this tool and see how it goes. I may have to pick up another Ryobi tek4, that little driver was nice for light duty work!

Thanks again for the replies!

I picked up the dcf682 at Home Depot. This version doesn't have the rotating handle. Operation is very intuitive. I changed out a bunch of outlets with it today and found it to be quite handy. I won't use it everyday, but when I do need it, it is a timesaver.

Honestly, I have the original 7.2 nicad dewalt screwdriver and it was the best purchase I made when it was new.. NOW- the 12v max screwdriver with an extension for the drivers is a much better solution.. I can't stand the gyro stuff - I think it's all just a gimmick
