New Discussion Board Suggestion

I am in the planning stages of a complete makeover of my unfinished 3-Car Garage and have been using Garage Journal as a valuable resource of information. That includes Flooring - Heating - Lighting and Cabinets. When researching for a particular area of concern the Garage Journal Board has subject matter areas established for major components of the builds. One area I am spending more time researching is surrounding Cabinets. I can do searches and find a number of examples however at times they are imbedded within other threads and off-topic. Since they are an integral part of the total Garage makeover I would like to see a thread for "Cabinets and Shelves" much like Flooring, Heating and A/C, and Lighting and Electrical that would be a single source of information the subject matter. Just my 2-cents and thanks for listening.

Thanks mebedave and I completely agree with your suggested nomenclature, shelving is simply one option surrounding storage. I want to custom build my own cabinets and read a thread here with step-by-step photos and information on the process they used however I will be damed if I can locate it now.

Thanks again.

Indeed, a "Cabinetry and Storage" topic/section would be a good idea. More likely to happen, if there can be a site sponsor for that section (like a cabinet manufacturer or some such).

"Compressed Air" is another one that needs its own topic.

As the site content grows, it is becoming harder to find valuable info. So, people start new threads for topics which have already been beaten to death numerous times.

Also, whatever hosting is being used for the site needs to be upgraded. many times, access to the site is painfully slow and I will just leave and come back later on.

If this is something that you'd really like to see happen, you should start a thread in the "question and suggestion" area in the "to the editors" section. That should get some mods or even Ryan the word. That's where Ryan saw the complaint about the site being slow and said that he was upgrading the server.

I can chime in on Ryan's side for this one: up to a certain point, hosting is so cheap it's almost ridiculous; you can host a fairly complicated site with moderate traffic for $100 a year.

Then you get a continual load of 50-300 simultaneous users... and to keep it from ever slowing down much, you may be looking at $10k a year for hosting and bandwidth. So the site either goes pay, has a fundraising drive every two weeks, or has slowdown issues. Pick one... :wtf:

Cabinets and storage, benches and surfaces, layout and design; it's all part of the General Discussion. At least the way I see it. too many sub forums and it gets to be too much work to see what everyone has to say.

I think that's the point here without enough sub forums you must sort through hundreds of General Discussion topics. I check in everyday with General Discussion just to see whats up in "General". I do not go to Heating, lighting, flooring etc everyday unless I need info. General should be for general miscellaneous stuff, lets face it Cabinetry/storage is a big ticket discussion topic I think... apparently other think the same and it should have it's own sub forum.

I, for one think we got it pretty good. If I needed to search for info on a particular subject 10 or so years ago, it was off to the library. Now, with the ease of the internet, one evenings worth of searches will yield too much info.

I think we are starting to take it for granted that info should be spoon fed to us instantly. I understand what you are asking, but my opinion is things are pretty darn good as they sit when it comes to searches. And if a shotgun search doesn't work for you, all you need to do is post a question and your information will be waiting for you the next time you log on.

I'm with Zeke on this. I use this and one other forum a lot. The other has no subforums, and I sometimes miss that feature, but the trouble with adding more subforums here is that everyone's current hot button would be a subforum candidate. Too many and it won't be a problem of Search, it will be a problem of Cross-reference: i.e. "let's see, was that in Wall Colors or Wall Finishes?" I exaggerate, but you get the point.

The real thing, IOW, is to use the Search function well, and that is possible only if users title their threads properly. "I have a question" is not a good title, for example - a search on titles won't get much out of this. Specific titles make search easy, and that makes subforums a little less important. My two kopecks.

Whoa… The Great Oracle has Spoken, Never realized that a “Newbie” could not have an original thought and only the all-knowing 6-month-Senior Member 35masterr could make a suggestion.
I simply made a recommendation on how I think the Board may be made more convenient for those seeking explicit information and never hinted that others never thought or suggested it before or that I had more intuition than other members of this forum. If you read any of my posts I have commented that this is a “Great Board” and I appreciate the opportunity to be part of it. Boards like this are self-perpetuating and build knowledge bases established on the experience of others. However to state that “Some Neebies seem to want to change every thing just after a few posts”, not sure want a Neebie is however I made one suggestion that I thought would make “Cabinets and Storage” subject matter information more easily accessed by the creation of a sub-forum because they are an integral part of most individual’s builds. If I would have suggested a sub-forum for “Craftsman Wrenches that I have Lost” than I would understand how others could feel something like that would be absurd. I still believe it would be an appropriate sub-forum however have no illusions that others will either completely agree or totally disagree with me. To make a sarcastic comment simply to make yourself feel better does nothing to better the experience of today’s and future Garage Journal users.
I will stand by and protect your right to Post comments if you stand by my right to ignore arrogant people like you.

I tend to agree, a forum covering cabinets, shelving work benches, and storage ideas would compliment the electrical, flooring and general garage discussion. There is alot of traffic on storage ideas and it would probably cut bandwidth slightly to have a separate forum, as people doing searches would have better luck with less searching involved.

I like the idea of a Lifts forum and all the stuff that would fall into that category like foundation/prep.

Just because someone is new to a forum site doesn't mean they are a newbie to all forums. Case in point, before I came here I'd been in more than a handful of forum sites, some for years, thousands of posts, including one I set up, hosted, AND moderated. Experienced for sure and with different view points just like every other swingin' **** & boobie here.

However, people should remember to post in the appropriate sections. For example the 'pt cruiser' post should be in Free Parking and this one should be Questions & Suggestions ;)

Well we could change Flooring to interiors and cover all benches, cabinets, wall coverings etc and then change Heating and A/C to Facilities that would cover heat/ac/, aircompressors and piping , water and electrical.

I agree. Though there is an incredible amount of knowledge here, it can be hard to find certain areas of interest.

But hey, I am a FNG as well, so what do I know?:headscrat

Please do a " lift forum" everyday there's chatter about lifts on "general" I know there's people here that don't want any change, no one likes change. I think that's the real problem.
