Working on my new garage that I have always wanted. My own design, free standing 26x40.I am more of a Jack of all trades and like working on cars and wood working. It has 2 8x9 doors in the gable end and one in the rear sidewall where I will have a 2 post lift. There's a 26x25 loft area for storage. A steel beam with 1 post for a clear area for cars. Everything but the foundation walls have been done by myself and family and friends helping. [/IMG]ca7a38769e6593d9d5e4e534ad442d0a.jpgf00be33a689c463a0c02821f4d3bf982.jpg

Great build :)

I'm curious on a couple things relative to your I-beam...how did you fasten the wood top plate to it, and do you have a picture of the pocket on the wood column? I just set a beam for my shop although it was an internal wall header rather than a central support.

I welded some flat "knife plates" to each end to bolt to the wooden columns it sits on. Just curious on how others were going about this.

Would like to know what it took to get that past the planning department. Here I was told it would take a separate permit signed off by a structural engineer

I had the I-beam supplier punch 5/8" holes every 2' and used carriage bolts to bolt down the top plates. The end over the wood post has 2 lag bolts down and the top plates are half lapped with the wall. I still have to weld the other end to the 4x4 column top plate.

Small town and i just had to show the calculation for sizing the beam. It is good when the building department uses some common sense instead of looking for any reason to block you.
