New drill press project

Picked this up from the (semi) local radio classifieds. Met a nice gentleman and swapped $55 for this.

A few squirts of WD-40 and I plugged it in and ran it! I look forward to spiffing it up a bit.
Is there a consensus on using a factory similar paint, or doing whatever? I've been thinking of painting all my stuff a dark metallic blue...

Nice machine, nice price. I think dark metallic blue would be sweet, but if you decide to go original, I'm sure some of the guys will point you in the right direction. I believe it would have been a darker grey but I am no expert, I have run into several discussions about matching colors to original. There are threads on the site covering the emblems as well.

Looks like you need to find a proper pulley for the motor.

So do we have a 14" Delta bench model with a fabricated base and column extension to convert it to a floor model? How are the two columns mated?

The builder is a good hack; maybe the only one in the known world who wouldn't have tossed the OEM base when he did the mod. Having the base, it can go back to being a bench mount, should anyone so choose.

Your DP, so paint it what you like; JMHO, but I cringe when I see a Delta anything other than the original gray.

Its more of a stand actually, pull 2 bolts and its separated. That was the one bummer about the day, I was expecting and hoping a floor model as I have a newer craftsman bench model already, but I am happy to have it, found a pic of what it should look like on another post.

Yep, that's the color. I like the base on yours better however. Yours is the older Walker Turner design base I believe. For what you paid, you'll have no problem getting your money (if not necessarily your time) out of it when you find the floor model you are looking for.

Good looking press there. I'd caution you against spiffing that up to much or you might upset the whole Feng shui / ambiance of the whole shop. It seems a much better fit in its surroundings as it is.

I like it as is too but that is not to say it wouldn't also look great restored. Normally I don't like the spare tire rim stands but that one is kind of cool.

Valspar Cobalt Cannon is pretty dark, and closely matches my early Delta machines:

I can't stand 'rim stands'. That will go. As far as the fem shui in my shop, I am not a big fan of the current too 'f'ing lazy to fix things vibe... but working 70+hours a week is kicking my ***.

It will be done...I'm just hoping its in my lifetime at this point

Ha! hey that's mine!

I bought mine in a pile of pieces for $10. I made an electrolysis bath to clean up all the cast parts, and used a buffers with aggressive abrasive to clean up the knobs/handles/shaft/spindle. For paint, I used rustoleum in a can, gloss grey. Looks/works great now.

Well, I guess you didn't mind then, I searched on here for one that was finished to show my wife (before I picked it up), she loved it and was even excited when she saw the one I got.
I'm looking at a way to make it a stable floor model, but I may just go with the benchtop.

Decided I'm going to paint it grey, but use the blue on the ridges....I can't leave stuff stock

I cannot recommend the electrolysis bath enough. The drill press was my first time using that technique, and it's cheap, effective, and almost labor free! The rust is being removed while you sleep. It's awesome!

Also, bake your cast iron in the oven at 150-200 or so for a few minutes before painting, it'll help the paint cure.

Probably wont need to bake it, my shop is about 120-140 inside during the day,

I have some evapo-rust I have used on car parts, think the electrolysis is better enough to justify the set up?
