I didnt notice a thread for this anywhere, so I thought Id bring it up. Has anyone else seen the new dual 80 ratchets with the screws in the head going down through the top? I have no part numbers or any specifics, as I was busy at the time and didnt really look too closely at it. My dealer said it was a design change to cure the issue of the screws coming loose sometimes. Im not really looking to replace any of my dual 80s, as Ive only had the issue with 2 of them, but I guess Im just curious about the whole deal.

It is exactly as your dealer said. Of course, it'll be said that it was changed because the chinese couldn't put the screws in from the bottom.:deadhorse

The new part numbers are same as the old except the letter a has been added to the end, example being S80A. Theres been a few threads about the revision and it is not exactly new news.

I do find it interesting that the new Dual 80 quick release ratchets still have the screws on the bottom.

I see. I guess I didnt get the memo.

Which two dual 80's did you have issues with and what were the issues? So far mine (Four of them.) have been flawless thank goodness.

From what I've seen, the only ratchets to get the revision are the 1/2". The 3/8 and 1/4 haven't changed.

It was my two 1/2" drive ones.

I don't think all the 80s have gotten the rev yet. Maybe they all will, maybe not

Correct. On the 1/2" ones the cover screws come loose, allowing the gear to sit pissed and cause the ratchet to slip and bind, chewing the teeth up. Both of mine have done this, now they have blue Loctite on the screws. One got a new kit, the other needs one. Haven't broken them yet through use, seems an SLF80 can take a 4' pipe without incident.

Same story here. First one I didnt notice until one of the screws was missing (a little nerve racking since I use it for ALOT of major engine work), and the second one i caught early. Both got Loctite, both have been flawless ever since.

I heard the kids could crank them out faster and cheaper by changing the design. Their little fingers could put the screws in quicker and therefore saved Snap On 50 cents per ratchet!

First one failed on me while doing an emergency brake repair in the dark in the pouring rain. Couldn't see any reason why it was sometimes locking up and sometimes slipping. It wasn't until the next day when i looked at it closer i saw the coverplate wasn't sitting flush.
