Hi all, Having a 40x40x14 pole barn installed on 20 acres with anticipation to build a house some day too. We are exempt from permits and inspections. I am going to buy all the supplies on Thursday to run the electric service this weekend. I have a 200 amp meter set on the pole. I purchased a 200 amp panel with feed through lugs and 4 breaker spots to mount on the pole under the meter. I plan to run 3/0 Copper wire in conduit to the house site and then daisy chain to the pole barn. My main question is; do I have to run a ground wire in the conduit to the house with the 3/0 or can I just ground it separately at the house and the barn? Thanks for any help you can offer.

Since u will have disconnects at the pole u will need to run 4-wire feeders to both the house qnd the garage. U will need 2 ground rods for each subpanel and u will also need to isolate the neutral bars in the subs. This may require a separate ground bar kit depending on the brand of panel.

What size feeder are u running to each structure? How long are the runs?

Thanks for the info wyliesdiesels. Running 3/0 copper feeders and probably a #4 or 6 ground. Run from pole to house is ~270' and then ~30' from house to barn. Will use same feeder/ground size from house to barn.

200 amp to house, 100 amp to barn. Really don't know if I need 100 at barn. We will have our RV plugged in part time and it's 50 amp, plus lights, outlets, etc inside barn.

What electric loads will u have in the barn? One man shop?

For most one man shops, 100a is more than enough!

For the house @ 200a and 270' u need 3/0 CU like u said or 300Kcmil AL.

For the barn @ 100a and 300' u need

Check the pricing on aluminum wire. Big cost difference.

Also from the house to the barn I would use 2-2-2-4 MHf on a 90A breaker. Use a 100A load center in the barn.
