New(er) Snap-On Special General Service Sets - Questions

Hi all,

I live between Canada and the US. Finding it's a PITA to bring tools back and forth across the border. Decided it's easier to build a second setup here in Canada and just have duplicates on the other side of the border.

That said, Looking at best bang for your buck for new tools, I've come across what appears to me some limited general service sets. I was told these are non-catalog items and truck items only? They seem to be a promotional item of some sort and I see them popping up on Craigslist, eBay and the like for some pretty crazy low prices...

Observation: Sockets don't seem as "nice" or robust" as some of my older, 80's 90's vintage sockets at home... but they will do for here. That's not really the reason of this thread...

Anyways, I picked up the following 2X sets in Metric but I can't for the life of me find or source anything in SAE equivalent. Perhaps my searching skills are lacking? Would rather buy a set similar in 1/4 and 3/8 in SAE vs paying equivalent for just Shallow and Deep socket sets. Pricing for these on the auction circuit or second hand market as a package are almost like getting medium depth sockets and extensions for free.

Anyone know if there was something similar to these in an SAE version? Do you know what the SO part number are, or any photos?

The 3/8 sets run about 1100, but they can be had for about half that on promos.

Beautiful sets I say. I have similar sets, but I had to build my sets one component at a time buying socket sets individually from ratchets and breaker bars).

About the only thing I did differently is I went with mid-length sockets rather than standard shallow. In my experience, I haven't been in many situations where I must have a shallow, but I've been in plenty where a deep is too long and a shallow is just barely too short to reach a nut that's on the end of a bolt.

Thank you for those part numbers. This will help with my search. Hopefully I can find something within my budget soon.

Ideally, I'm trying to avoid retail pricing.

I picked up both 3/8 and 1/4 metric sets together for under $700.00 US combined. Kijiji is your friend! At first I thought it was a clone or a fake! I do keep running across a couple 12-point sets, but I'd prefer the 6 point. Holding out for an SAE 3/8 Metric set to show up.

Thank you for the insight. Never considered that.

Well now that it's been pointed out publicly I suppose this one will sell for a crazy price! lol. Thanks though, I will be watching and perhaps bidding ( bid sniping) last minute if the auction doesn't go too crazy or out of budget.

that is a brave listing, considering there doesn't seem to be a reserve on it.

I agree -- Kinda surprised it's at no reserve, and not named with the actual item number. There has to be more people like me seeking these starter kits out?

How are the tips on those williams? I think those drivers are relabeled under some other brands. Keep us posted on how you like them.

Are you implying Williams makes those screwdrivers? If so, who makes this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DRFUYJC/?tag=atomicindus08-20

(*cough*) that is a socket set, not a screw driver set. . . . . . .

actually, i didnt say williams made them, i said i liked them. i bought a set of phillips tips when they appeared on the amazon permathread a while ago.

i just recently bought a set of "cabinet tip" slotted screw drivers.

i have several sets of screw drivers. i have old (and new) sets of craftsman "standard", i have sunex "black square handle" (like old style snap-on), i even have some fancy new milwaukee insulated screw drivers. and those williams ones.

i tend to prefer fully polished chrome tools. i find that they are easier to clean up, which i do at the end of the day before i leave as i put things away. the hard handle screw drivers have that down well, they are easy to clean. the sunex square handles are easier than the craftsman ribbed, but they both clean up well. the problem is that when they get greasy, they get slippery.

the williams ones have soft (but not squishy) handles. even when they get greasy, they dont get slippery, at least not that i have noticed yet. they clean up pretty well so far also.

now, as for who makes them, i have no freaking idea. to be honest, i gave up on that some time ago. i have decided that "identical" kits, some from tekton, some gearwrench, and some napa, might actually, really be the same thing, but often they are really not. it is clear, to me at least, that there are some contract manufacturers who will change their production to meet demands for their customers (the "name brand tool companies"). the fit and finish may not be the same. the quality of the metal used might vary. the composition of the handles, while they look the same, might be very different.

i have not seen those KTM screw drivers before. they sure look similar, and i would find it easy to believe that the same manufacturer likely made them and the williams versions. are they comparable? dont know. i found something i like, and as the prices fluctuate, i added some to it, and i will likely continue.

and, in the end, it will be worth some small increment of cost to keep them all looking the same, to me.

if they really are the same thing, with just different dye in the plastic, they should get added to the "tool equivalency thread", assuming they are not there already (i didnt check, although i should have, because i would have been just as happy with the black ones as the blue ones, if i could have saved some money, and started there.)

and there you go. likely more answer than you wanted . . . . .

Yep Ebay seller cancelled the sale on the last day, being the set was still at .99 and has now relisted the set for over 300.00.

He ended the listing about 45 min after he posted it. It had 6 days and 23 hours left. Then he relisted it for a 1 day auction with a 300 starting bid.

Actually, I bought it for $500... and the seller then canceled it stating the item was out of stock or damaged and then created another auction thesame day for the exact same thing. I won that too... Again canceled .... Something very fishy going on.

The seller is playing games. Not sure to what extent. The seller also has a second account and is creating duplicate listings back and forth. According to eBay seller is following the rules... I don't see how. I don't understand why List an item with a BIN price and then not follow through with the sale? Seems like a lot of work if you ask me for little benefit? It's not like he's getting screwed on the shipping either. $65US my cost to ship and $100US my cost to import to Canada via the global ship program plus the $500 BIN price. I'm investing $675 US / 900CAD in this set...

Sad

http://www.ebay.com/sch/bkrjim1/m.h...om&LH_Complete=1&rt=nc&_trksid=p2046732.m1684

Relisted item under "other" account -- same auction. Same game

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/SNAP-ON-3-8-...b9e1e56&pid=100040&rk=3&rkt=4&sd=182328868113

I even paid for the first BIN auction I won with the seller and now I have to wait 2 weeks to receive the refund from PayPal. So the seller's games ******* my funds...

Buyer beware of these two accounts...

I would avoid dealing with the sellers bkrjim1 and masellisdetailing on eBay

I actually did. I've tried to bid on the other listing and the seller canceled my bid just moments ago.

He may have something against me at this point... I'm not even trying to harass the guy. Just trying make a purchase here.

Could be 1 of 3 things I see...

1 Hacked account -- unlikely

2 Seller doesn't want to ship to Canada (in my case if this is due to my locations) but isn't familiar enough or is too lazy to change auction settings (had this happen before -- a lot believe it or not)

3 Seller is creating a bidding war trying gauge interest on said item, seeing "what it's worth to the public" and then when he's actually ready to sell he'll post it up at a much higher price 600-800 with a quick BIN price hoping one of the screwed buyers jumps on it just because. Evil... but smart.

Either way, GarageJournal indexes quite regularly on Google, so if anyone searches either username on google, my posts should show up stating what is going on with the seller(s). maybe will keep him from messing around with other folk.

i actually bid on the auction the first time around also. when he shut the auction down, he canceled all the bids at the same time. is that part of the way it works?

i didnt chase it after that, since i saw what the other max bids were, and knew i didnt want it that bad . . . . .

Wasn't allowed to bid on the other auctions. Seller blocked me. Would have been nice if the seller would have just said something to me. Oh well.

I'm still looking for either one of those sets. Would also be interested in purchasing just the plastic tray if anyone has one laying around -- would be willing to pay plus shipping.

Looking for
136TM, 1/4 dr 6pt sae service set (36pc)
Never seen a photo of this actual set either -- does it even exist?!

Or the tray that it comes with if anyone discarded or has no use for theirs?

Have you thought about going with Williams for a 2nd socket set?Same USA quality,Same Warranty at a much cheaper price. The only downside is that their socket sets are not as wide ranging as the Snap On General Service sets and do not feature the F80 ratchets.Williams does not make Intermediate sockets, but a Snap On set could be found on FeeBay.Add those to this http://www.toolsdelivered.com/Willi...e-Tools-3-8-Inch-Drive-Chrome-SAE-Socket-Sets
and you would be very close to what you are asking for at a bargain price.

Thanks for the input, but I'll stick with SnapOn.
