Hello all. Just found this site a few days ago. I looked around for something like this before and had no luck, but this time the google gods where good to me. The only garage I have right now are 3 storage units in two different states. I'm overseas working for the next few years. I plan to start building on my 5.6 acres in Montana next year. First and most importantly will be the garage. Nothing crazy, just a two car garage with an efficacy apartment on top. Something to get my house hold goods and cars out of storage. The main house will follow a few years later. Then a nice work shop when I get the chance.

Anyways....here is a link to the garage that I'm looking at building. The lines sort of match the house I'm looking into building.

There are a few things that I plan to change. For one...I only want one big door over two single car doors. I also want an interior door from the garage to the stairs. Also plan to put a washer and dryer in the storage area downstairs. The builder I have working up an estimate right now also suggested raising the rear side roof to match the front, giving me more head room. I like the thought off that.

Anyone else have an suggestions?

Thanks and I'm looking forward to learning all I can through you guys....

Mike

I looked at the drawings before reading your comments and thought of the same things that you did in your text. I would definitely put a dormer on the back, too. There is no window in the great room, and a dormer would give more headroom and a window. In our area, the great room is considered as habitable space, and requires an opening for emergency use, which is a window meeting specified minimum sizes in width, height and opening area. Our code also requires fire rated construction between the garage and living space, but the configuration easily lends itself to that.
