Greetings all, I am getting ready to build a new home and with it comes a new 36x24 detached garage for me. The exterior / roof / height / etc. on the outside is all governed by the final materials of the house (garage and house have to match). The main focus of what I need info on is the interior so I can lay this out in a very efficient manner.

Must haves:
1. Lift. I do a lot of car restoration stuff and found a 2 post lift is essential to lift body off of frame. I also have two cars to store in the garage on a regular basis (57 Chevy and 60 Bonneville) so a second lift just for parking may be in order.

2. Shop air. I bought a DeWalt Emglow air compressor 7 years ago thinking it would be pretty robust for normal use. Wrong. I bought a second compressor a year ago from HF and it has outperformed the DeWalt compressor by far for half the price. Either way, those need to be upgraded to a larger 220V unit that I can use for a small sandblast cabinet, and some air tools. I want to run the air to several locations across the shop safely, but don't want to blow too much money on it. Hence, iron pipe (price) and PVC (safety) is out.

Advice really needed:
1. Electrical outlets. In a 36x24 shop, how far should I space the 110V outlets and how many do you guys recommend? I know I will need one 220V for the air compressor and one for my MIG welder, do I need a third receptacle just in case?

2. Lighting. LED or fluorescent? How many?

3. Efficient workbench / storage. I have a small lathe and mill, several items such as grinders, vises, etc. that need to be permanently mounted. Should I do a smaller bench along the wall and put an island out a little ways to accommodate the grinders?

4. Shop vac system. I plan on putting a regular (although strong) shop vac in with PVC ports at various places, probably at the 4 corners or 4 walls. Has anyone put something in like this before?

Ok, this should cover it for now (I emphasize the "for now" part) HA!

Thanks everyone!

Welcome from south alabama

I'd like to see the 57 Chevy. I had one and dad had one. Alas he sold it when I graduated college. Roll tide.

Wish I still had it.

Hello and welcome from Ohio! I hope you are going with AT LEAST a 12' side wall. Some lifts require 146" height. Good luck.

Trigged: sounds like a great project and one i'm hoping to build in a few years. as far as all your wants and needs you might want to start a thread on garage gallery with all those questions. also so you thread doesn't get lost in the thousands of threads already in progress you will need to add lots of pictures, ask questions and put the link for the thread in your sig line of your profile and participate in the rest of the forum.

for instance one of our most active members is building a small 2 car addition to his shop and within a month he already has 40,000 views and the tresses are not even up yet. he's getting plenty of advice, BS and conversation which is always good when you are in the process of building.

I've heard a Max Jax is a nice lift and if big enough for your needs it can either be mobile or take up a permanent spot in your garage. some of the other questions you have i'll defer to the members that have their garages full or just built what you are asking about.

I usually hang in old tools threads and especially vises if you might have any need to visit those threads stop in and say hi.

welcome to our group and happy 4th of July
