New from East TN

Hi everyone! The name is jarrett and I am a huge fan of the site. I have been lurking around for a while. I had not signed up though due to the fact that i dont really have a garage. Still, I have appreciated the ideas and flow of information in here and love reading/ dreaming of a garage of my own one day.
As luck would have it my father in-law was consolidating his wood working shop from his garage into a more suitable workspace. I was graciously provided the oppurtunity to help clean it out in exchange for use of the space once complete. He drives an F-350 and cannot fit it inside regardless.
Naturally I Jumped at the chance to have a space my own to work on my random projects and hang with friends.
I have no plans for it except clean it out and really figure out what i have to work with. The first part of the cleaning was last week after the machines were out. I expect another week of so of cleaning before I can begin to move in my tools.

Jarrett: nice work cleaning up your FIL's garage. plenty of ideas here and especially in the garage gallery so enjoy the reading and hope you get some great ideas for that space. are you planning on working on cars in the garage or using it as a wood shop or ??

It will be for general mechanic duties. I am not a woodworker myself so any work in that realm would be done with the assistance of my FIL in his shop.
I currently have a little Miata I want to use it for and a couple small scooter projects i enjoy tinkering with.
I have single standing craftsman tool box i got from my grandfather when he retired, (autobody repair man) so sanding, cleaning restoring that for my tools will totally be first.
I am way to OCD and clean to ever allow the amount of dust i cleaned out in there again.

Welcome neighbor. East Tn is my home too - cool to see somebody from my neck of the woods here. That garage is starting to shape up- keep up the hard work on it.

Jarrett: sounds like you are a man with a plan(s). might i suggest looking on Craigslist for this kind of shelving to give you a bit more room to keep things off your bench and the floor. you can buy two units new at Costco for $150 each if you can't find used ones for less. the picture of the one that is 3 units wide is actually 2 shelving units of shelving.

they are very stout and i like them because you don't need a shelf on the floor so you can roll some of your toolboxes, air compressors and other tools under them and have storage above. even if all the walls are full I've even put some up in the middle of my 2 car garage and i might again if i need to.

Thanks for the friendly welcomes All! Apologies on the pictures as they are from my phone. You may be able to notice the standing air compressor in the corner, this I have just learned will be staying in the garage for at least another six months or so. AWESOME!!!
(drivesitfar) Thank you for the shelf suggestion. I actually helped the father in law install a 20ft set of shelving similar to that when the new workshop was built. The smaller version will be checked into for sure.
It is looking to shape up into a nice weekend, so hopefully I will get a chance to get the rest out.

Jarrett: i didn't notice anything wrong with your pictures so if you can do better than those then that would be great.

keep us posted on your progress here and find some threads that you enjoy reading or learning on and post there too even if just saying you enjoyed what was said.

Table close up. The white box is my tool box project from my Grandpa. It is a nice old craftsman. I will try to get the base for it over tomorrow.

Jarrett: what's next? you are making great progress. it looks like you found a nice old vise on one of the benches that is a keeper and probably a 80 year old Reed vise.

I got a chance to work in the garage this weekend. It wasn't so much on the garage as in. I needed to get some maitenance started on the Miata. I will be back to organizing and cleaning when possible.

I still haven't gotten the Garage totally cleared out and clean, but i really wanted to have a test run and get to digging.

All i wanted was a Picture!


I ended up going with the diagonal layout you see because it left me with four large triangular work areas on the main faces of the car.

The tighest points. Not too bad at all.





I really took time to just absorb this site.
This was under my trunk carpet


This was my absolute worst rust i have found. (under the car included) This is also where you can see how the back acess panel has only partially rusted. This is what led me to believe that the window had leaked onto the main area and it did not drain down the back.
I think i Should replace this thing.


The track for the soft top was looking really decent. the top was relatively new and will go back when cleaned.



and finally, a friend had stopped by to check out the garage and see what i was going to start with. He also wanted to put on one of his wheels to see what they would look like. I obliged of course, but I have to say that i am not a fan. I like the idea of a simple five spoke but fake bolts in a wheel? why not just make a nice clean rim. Not sure and no disrespect to any that appreciate the "style bolts," not my preferred look.


In the last picture you can see my motorcylce a bit. That is what is going to be performing daily duties until the Miata is rolling again.
