Hi everyone.

Just signed up on here today trying to get some idea. My wife and I just put in offer in on our first house that was accepted and we are awaiting the rest of the loan process. Our must have list was really short, being the 2 major things of a double vanity in the master and at least a 2 car garage. Well the house we put an offer in on doesn't have either of our major wants. So the garage is on the list as something we are going to put in first. Hence why I was snooping around on the net and came across this forum.

About me, I am a hunter and fisherman. Love the outdoors, and love working on my trucks. I have a solid axle 96 s10 blazer that I am still in the process of building as well as 2001 Tahoe and an 86 Grand Wagoneer (that I am trading for a k5 blazer here soon). I am also currently in the Basic Law Enforcement academy with a job waiting (still crossing my fingers that its still available). I am also very handy. I studied construction technologies in high school and I was on my way to being a General contractor, when I had a change of heart for what I was suppose to do. I also have many buddies that studied construction in college as well as a sister-in-law who is a partner with her brother and dad as a builder (so I am hoping for some hook ups).

Next on to the future project. Here is what is being dreamed at the moment. A 36 wide by 30 deep garage. 3 bays, with the far right bay being a high bay for a future lift (so I am thinking 14ft for this). It will also have a second floor above the first 2 bays for a bonus room, and then storage above the 3rd bay for my wife's teaching stuff (dang teachers got some stuff). So the second floor would be 24 x 30 roughly. There will also be rough in for the HVAC and plumbing as well.

So thats it for now, I will be around searching builds and what not trying to find some ideas. Thanks!

Welcome. I will recommend going at the very least 40' wide if you want to have 3 bays. 36 is going to be tight.

Thanks for the insight! I will definitely discuss with the wife. I had a hard time getting the 36' "approved" but whats another 4 ft in the grand scheme of things!! :)

Thanks for the welcome! The house we put an offer on is in Holly Springs, right near sunset lake and bass lake!

I know when I started dreaming this up, I asked my dad what size his was because it is way too small. His is a barn style that is 24 x 24 that he built himself back in the early 80s with slab and blocks for 2500. It has a second story where we do all our reloading and gunsmith work, and has a small pull down attic for storage above it. I knew that I had to have it larger than that, so we will see what happens.

Here's my 30x40 just over the mountains in East Tennessee. It could have easily been 3 bays wide but I wanted an "office" type area to display all my gas & oil collectibles and racing memorabilia from mine & my parents many years messing with things that go fast. 10' doors as well. Anything smaller would have been in the way when using the lift with the doors open.

Nice! Thanks for the pic too! The plan is for her to be able to park in the garage all the time and provide me with room to work on my toys. There's enough parking outside! I don't know if my wife is going to go for the extra 4 ft but I will keep at it. We will see.

Welcome to thefray from Wilson, NC!

I have a 40'x40' myself that I only have $20K in thus far. It's a 3-bay also. Check out the link in my signature line to view my build thread and let me know if you have any questions.

So here is a rendition of what I was thinking for the garage. Its a 24wx30dx10h Main with the outshoot of 16wx20dx14h.

It also has a second floor bonus/bedroom with a walk in and up storage/attic. and it has the wife's approval! Opinions?

Welcome from another new guy in NC! I'm in Wake Forest and have a new garage build that's just gotten underway.
Can you build something that big in Cary? Are you outside city limits? Good luck with your plans!

Hey, thanks for the welcome! The house we just put an offer in on is where it will go. It has a Holly Springs address, but its located outside the city limits! I was definitely not staying in cary! Not my type of town, I need something a little more country!
