Howdy folks: I now know that there is a forum for every single thing out there. Well that suits me just fine as it were as I'm currently working on a tool chest replacement. (long story enter here) Moved into my house with the fam about seven years ago and the landscaping was done, but the garage was totally empty as far as shelving and the like. Since my folks own the place I didn't want to anchor anything down and cut holes into anything. The Costco shelving units I got allowed me to shelve and entire wall with shelves (the industrial steel kind). With two sets, I could overlap the use of the middle uprights and that gave me another single set of uprights. Cut in half I was able to produce a waist height work table that topped with two solid core wooden doors and capped in sheet metal, I then had one heck of a workbench. All of my reloading equipment and such was mounted and all of my tools found their home amongst the shelving. I had a rolling tool chest from my previous home that I altered the shelving height to allow it to roll right under the lowest shelf as well as allowing room for my compressor and vacuum among other things.

So advance forward quite a bit and my rolling toolbox that I'd made myself and the shelves that were designed because of it and its height was often sought after when my son would come visit. So another day goes by and my son, daughter and her husband, my son in-law decided that they really needed to acquire some car parts at the local junk yard. Fixing a 1995 Town car limo is quite a full time job it would seem. They then decided that it would be best if they didn't split up my tools, so they managed to squeeze in that limo my entire tool chest wheels and all and then went to the junk yard. A little off roading later and they came back to the house apologizing to me for my "tool problem". When asked what problem that was is when I found out my tools were missing in the first place. Darn it anyway. Not only my large chest, but my smaller cantilever toolbox both hit the deck and split wide open spilling both of their contents. I still don't know if I'm missing any tools or not since the chest was unusable I had no place to put the piles of tools in order to take inventory and that's the current condition I find myself in.

A trip down to Lowes to shop for a new tool chest produced a lot of "Boy I wish that could work" type of items and I finally picked the nicest one among the ones that might fit under my shelving units. I have 33" of clearance, but the new box was 23". Giving myself an inch of extra room and that left a total of nine inches that I had to produce in order to fully utilize that space and get the box a rolling.

Northern Tool came up with the casters I plan on using since they have six inch wheels and a mounting height of seven and a half inches. So with a bottom plate of steel to beef up the underside of the chest and the casters, I'll end up with that very same one inch of clearance between the top of the chest and the opening of the shelves. I finally have all of the parts and steel on order to beef up and caster the tool chest and wire it for 110 AC while I'm at it. Using it as a project and home repair tool box only (can't work on cars due to my implants and getting turned off) No kidding, my stomach implant got turned of simply by changing out a battery in my daughter's car. I had to go to San Francisco just to get it turned back on.

Besides elevating and getting the box moving and on wheels, I'm looking for advice in organizing my tools with magnetic anythings as an assist. I'm also looking on increasing my "driver" collection of tools and dedicating an entire drawer just to those tools. The box I have is the midsize Lowes stainless chest and the gull wing lid of the box has a walled area about two foot by a foot and a half. That's a pretty good work area for my guns and projects that I'd like to set up just for that purpose if I could. As mentioned it has an AC port and I'll be mounting a power strip on the bottom or back or even lid of the box. Looking for other ideas on what may be included in that top section whether Dremel tools or maybe a Foredom tool? Plenty of space and need ideas on what to do with it.

Love to read on others projects in the garage and specifically the tools we pride ourselves in owning and using in the garage. So long for now and expect to be chatting with you all as time progresses. Smithy.
