New gal from Indy

Hey,

I've been lurking this site at times, reading and looking at pictures. I live on the north side of Indianapolis and have a house with a 2 car gar attached by an open breezeway and a 3rd detached 16 x 22 garage at the rear of my 1 acre. Yes, I live in the city with 1 acre. I just bought this 1956 era house a few months ago from the original owner but I was friends with her for 25 years and have been around the house and loved the location, size and 3 garages for all of those 25 years. Mostly for the garages. Here's a pic of my 3rd gar.

Yes, that is one of my VW's, I have 2 more: 1 in the garage that will be the donor car for the other one that I inherited from my dad when he died. Here's a pic of the other one in sideways.

I've got some work to do on this garage like, decide to insulate and add a metal ceiling to the hip roof or just paint the inside roof (no ceiling)white, insulate and drywall the walls and improve the lighting. Not to mention the inside work that needs to be done.

On the ceiling/roof, I'd put some white foam ins up there if you are doing the walls and want some brightness and you want to follow the upper lines. You might be able to cut it in between the jack rafters if you have the patience. It would be interesting to say the least.

Not sure what you are talking about when you say "foam ins" but here is a shot of the inside roof.

"foam ins" = foam insulation. Sorry.

If it's framed right, you will be able to cut 8 shapes the same for each set of bays.

OK, I am new to posting on this forum...have lurked off and on for awhile. I have moved into a new house (new to me, built in 1956). It is a one story all brick house that I have wanted for years. I bought it from the original owner who I have known since 1986, I bowled on a team with her for 3 yrs.. she was an "old" lady then in our terms (63 or 64) and is now 89. She went into assisted living in May of 2010 and the house was vacant until I was able to buy it in Jan of this year. I was friends with her all these years and would stop by (she always said "stop by when you are in the neighborhood any time") any time I was going by her house...at least 5 -6 times a year or more.

A few reasons I always love this house was because it was:
1. A one story BRICK house, with a basement.
2. It was an acre in the city. I am 3 miles from a number of great area's in Indianapolis.
3. It has a 2 car garage attached by an open breezeway and a 1 car, 16 x 22, unattached garage at the back.

I think #3 was the real reason...LOL

It is an old house that needs updating but I have loved it for a long time.

Congrats on the multi-garage homestead! When you get ready to add lights & heat, you might want to check out Craigslist for equipment. I found 4' florescent shop lights for $3.00 a piece with bulbs! I've picked up over 400' of electric wiring @ garage & estate sales; total spent on lights & wiring is less than $50.00
You can even get good prices on insulation & sheet rock (drywall) if you watch C/L & the estate/garage/yard sales!

Thanks, I have had the same VW for 34 years. The yellow one and a blue one that I have will be restoring I have only had for about a year. I inherited the blue one when my dad died and I bought the yellow one to be the donor car.

Thanks..I've got to decide what to do with the ceiling, probably paint it white to brighten it up in there. Thanks for the tip to CL for the lights, I didn't think about it for lights. Darn, I passed up an estate sale yesterday. But I did find my wiring stuff in my storage unit so that is a plus.
