New Garage Build! help needed!

Hey guys, new to the forum. I just purchased my first house, and it is lacking my man cave aka garage. We had the ability to get a purchase plus improvements mortgage ( I'm in canada BTW ) to build me one. Unfortunately, this means that the contractor or supplies don't get paid for until the garage is done and inspected ( lawyer holds money in trust ). So i won't be building myself, atleast the actual structure.

But not to bore you with the legal bs, I need some help. I have $15,000 to spend. Its going to be a single car garage, I thought of making it an L-shape. I want the ability to work on my car comfortably, as well as have a decent work shop area. Also going to put the old leather couch in there if possible. Any one have any suggestions on sizes, or what I can get for my budget. Concrete needs to be poured, etc. etc.

I just need something to go off of, I will be updating and taking pictures through the process, and can't wait to get this done. I am calling for quotes from some contractors tomorrow, so hopefully someone can give me some ideas!

I built a L shaped single car garage for the same purpose. Car in one leg of the L and work space in the other leg. Each leg is 14' x 20'. I like the space alot. It's not huge, but its enough for most projects. I think you will find it challanging to build that size for $15,000 Canadian.

Can you build a pole barn? That would cut cost. But i think 15k will be tight with someone else doing the work.

Welcome.....

It's never big enough.....so go as big as you can. If one car...try to get it as wide as possible so you have more room on the side for storage.

Go as high as you can. If you go high enough, you might be able to put in a lift later.....which would give you a 2 car garage.

Electrical....don't settle for just a couple of outlets....figure at least one duplex every 6' and about 54" from the floor (gives you room to lay a 4x8 sheet of plywood against the wall and not block the outlet)

Plenty of lighting.....not just a single bulb in the ceiling.

You want at least 3 20a ckts....more if you can get it....not including the ckt for the lights.

You want a door from the house into the garage....and at least another man door from the garage to outside.

Make it as big as you can....even if you have to hold off on electrical and drywall. If they will let you use all the money for just slab and walls...do that...run the electrical and drywall this winter once your in the house.

And in case you didn't get the hint....make it as big as you can.

Don't go all out on electrical or lighting for now. Get the service in place to satisfy the bank and inspector. No insulation etc. keep it barebones to get as close to the 15k as you can. You can always add outlets, lights, etc later.
