New Garage Build...Help needed...

Greetings All...I've finally begun the build on my 40 x 40 dream garage that I intend on documenting here, but right now I need some advice from the pros...Here goes: I eventually want to run water and electric off of my main building to the garage, but at this point my builder says I have to rough in the pipe prior to the concrete pour on Monday. I should probably mention that I don't have permits for the water or electric portion of the build yet because I didn't intent to do this until Spring '11 at the earliest. I'm looking for qualified suggestions for how and what I need to do at this point to ensure success when I finish the water and electric later on. Pipe size? How much? Metal or PVC? Where in conjuction to the walls should the pipe go? This is all a first for me, so any help you folks can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jim

I would put in the pipes now....just stub them out and make sure you take plenty of pics.....and with luck the inspector won't give you any grief.....

I'm kind of at a loss as to why you didn't pull all of your permits at once....I think you will find that it will NOT save you money....

I would also suggest going through all of your garage build and making sure your not overlooking something.....

The only thing that must go in the slab is the drains and toilet rough in. You can run power and water into the garage above grade if needed.

I used 2 electrical pvc rough ins for access through the slab for electric/cable etc. I roughed in a 3" drain and toilet and ran them about 12" past the slab edge. Not sure of code in your area, but most codes require a "collar" where the drain or water pipe enters or exits the slab (a larger piece of pvc over the 3" in case of settling so it dont crack the pipe).

As Dawg said, be sure and take plenty of pictures with a tape measure in the picture. If using pvc, make sure that the purple primer is visible at every joint. Also make sure to take pictures of the horizontal pipes under the slab showing the level bubble. Inspectors will want to see a slope on the runs.

First of all, thanks for the replies. I'm going to plead 'lack of knowledge' for not getting that portion of the permits when I started the process. It had nothing to do with trying to save money, more likely it was something I didn't think through at the time. I'm hoping the inspector will understand I have no intent on trying to get around anything. I'll be happy to get what I need when I'm ready to actually put this all together. And I'm with you on going through the build to see if I missed something; again, I'm new to all of this and what I know I've garnered from this forum in the brief time I've been lurking here. I'll be documenting all of this in another thread...Until then, thanks again for the help...

Roscoe: I think you are referring to a "sleeve" instead of a "collar" but I guess I'm just being to technical, but I would sleeve / collar, all piping into the trenches, if it was my project. Just my $ .02. Good luck with the inspectors in the future!
