Well I am getting prepared to start a new build. Needing some additional space to store equipment and my construction trailer. The specs will be a 22'x30' with 10' ceilings, a second floor office, 2x6 walls, insulated 10x9 door, 2 zone mini-split for heating and cooling. Ill post some of my drawings later.

Ok so I am not off to a good start keeping this thread updated. I have now gon through several design revisions and settled on building the garage with a mezzanine instead of the full attic second floor. I am also researching lighting. The mounting height for the fixtures will be between 13 and 14’ above the floor. I am considering 4 100w high bay ufo pendants in the main open area.

I’ll post some pics tonight. Having a lot of trouble uploading from my phone.

Sounds like reasonable compromises. Those UFO high bay lights are the shiznit. I have 5 of them in a 40x60 at 16' up. The light switch is labelled "daylight" because they are bright... Recommend you get some that are dimmer compatible.

LOL 'Daylight' gotta love that. I was thinking the same thing about the dimmable fixtures. It makes sense when you just want some general illumination and not daylight.

I shopped and researched for proper lights for months before committing to these in the high bay of my shop

INTERIOR
MAIN SHOP – 14’ Ceiling
  • 7x HB 150001 50
  • LED: 18” x 30” 150 Watt
  • 18,500 Lumens
  • 5,000° K
  • $150 each

These are dimmable. If you go with LEDs (and dimmable) you'll need specific wire and a specific slider switch. I preferred LED figuring they'll out live me and I'll never need to replace them. And -- I find the lights you are considering to be quite bright and can cause glare.

Attached photo shows lighting at night. Don't mind the mess -- still organizing.
The amount/type of lighting you use needs to be considered with the treatment you put on the walls and floor.
  • My walls are OSB with 2 coats of Kilz primer and 3 coats of Kilz white paint.
  • My floors are epoxied but not with a particularly shiny finish (and with slip resistant particles broadcast across the floor)

It's been 2 years since I bought them. I do recall the salesman used a computer program in which he entered the dimensions of my shop. He allowed a foot for the chains attaching the lamps to the ceiling and a work surface of 40" for bench work. IIRC - he came up with 70FC -- that is a very fuzzy number.

Found this on-line. Hope it helps:
