New Garage Build

Hi all. I have been reading on this forum for a while but never posted.

I am about ready to start construction on a new detached garage and I wanted some opinions on the design. Anything I am missing or should consider before getting started? Basic details are:

28ft wide x 34ft deep
10 ft plate height
6/12 pitch hip roof
A 16x9 and 9x9 for garage doors
Hardie siding
Unfinished interior
I will do all of the electrical myself after construction

The two specific questions I have are on the roof design and the doors. For the roof I have a set of truss drawings from a local truss supplier but obviously hip trusses are a little more complex than gable trusses. My contractor says he can do it but it doesn't sound like he has really worked with hip trusses before. Should I be concerned or is it relatively straight forward to put a hip roof together with trusses?

For the doors do you guys see any issues with a 16ft door and a 9ft door on a 28ft wall? I know it is tight and it wont be a functional 3 car width but my plan is for two cars and a golf cart. I am thinking that my wifes car can go in the 9ft door and then my truck and the golf cart in the 16ft door. Unfortunately 28ft is as wide as I can go on my lot.

I strongly suggest that you don't skimp on the concrete, plenty of steel and proper curing to achieve maximum strength before too much construction, or parking vehicles thereon.
I can't comment further w/o knowing what part of the country you are located in.

I should be good on concrete. In order to get the building permit I had to get an "engineered slab" which basically just meant I had to pay an engineering firm $500 to stamp a drawing showing the required beams and rebar spacing. I dont remember off the top of my head exactly what the spacing was but I think it will be over built and I have a concrete guy that I trust to do a good job.

I guess I need to update my profile. Build is in Texas north of Houston.

you will have racking with that much door opening unless it is extremely well engineered.
Normal construction with plywood will not be enough, and I do not think your building department would allow it without an engineer stamping the plans.

What do you mean by racking? The building department already approved the plans, their only concern was with the headers so I got LAM beams speced out from my truss supplier and they where fine with it.

The sketch I used to get the permit is attached although this version is showing an 8 ft tall opening and I am looking for 9ft so the top of the header will essentially be flush with the bottom of the top plate.

Garage drains. And floor well sloped to drains. No slope, no pay.

When you have 25 of 28 feet consumed by opening, there isn't a lot of shear area to keep the long legs from folding. Consider a horizontal load at the top of the wall in the plane of the paper/screen. I would consider using 3/4" plywood/osb on the outside of the wall, and 1/2" on the inside. Nail every 6" with #10s.

Building codes will dictate the garage door sizes I'm sure. The 16' and 9' will leave only 12" between. Good luck.

I decided to go with a 14ft door instead of a 16ft so I think that should help. 28ft isnt wide enough to be a true 3 car anyways so I am really just looking to be able to get the golf cart in and out without having to move a vehicle so I think the 14ft will work perfectly for that.

Forms are set, concrete on Monday! We have been thinking about/planning for this build for about 3 years so it is super exciting to see it start to come together.

Well we finally got a little bit of a break from the rain so they have made some good progress in the last few days. I am so excited for this to be done so I can start moving stuff in!

Yeah the attached garage is a turn in two car on that end of the house. I will eventually be closing that in and turning it into a man cave/game room.
