New Garage Door - Advice Needed

I am in need of a new 16 x 7 garage door and looking for any suggestions from Big Box stores.

So far I am seeing the best ones are Home Depot and Mendards.

Offering R values of 18.4 at $999 at Menards and $1098 at Home Depot.

I don't have the funds to go anywhere else ......

The Home Depot brand is Clopay Premium and Menards is Ideal 5-Star

Right now I have a very old wooden/composite type door that bleeds air terribly. My garage faces the west and during the winter my garage is terribly cold and drafty.

I am hoping one of these doors will help seal things up.

The current door never closes flush at the top and even with the exterior vinyl weatherstripping it's still terribly draft ridden.

Looking for any advice /comments on the big box doors.

Thanks~

From what i understood when i did my shopping for doors a few months ago is they are the same doors. They are made for Home depot or Menards or whoever and use a different name to be "exclusive". Just be sure to have them read the fine print when ordering so you know exactly what you are getting as far as springs, tracks, and other hardware. There are lots of options, some of which i didn't know about till i got the doors and read the instructions they came with.

By the way, i ended up calling my local lumber store and gave them the price i got from Home Depot and they got me the same doors for a couple dollars cheaper. i want to say mine are the Model 6200, if i remember they are R-9... why are you going with such a high R door?

What is the average R-value needed? I am thinking of getting one that has a Faced polystyrene insulation with an R-value of 6.3.

Its a menards door that is on sale for 461.00

I am just getting back to think about my garage projects.... you know how it goes the list always gets longer and several items always go to the bottom of the list.

This is an example of why it helps to have your location in your profile. It would make it easier to offer options.

As for insulation....it's not that hard to insulate a door. Buy a few foam sheets from HD...cut to size....glue in using 3M adhesive.

But if you're really worried about heat loss....fix all those air leaks.

+1 that OP you really NEED to update your GJ Profile with City / State.

Your description of being "cold" will be wildly different if you're talking about Minnesota vs Miami !! :D

Another jumpstart on getting good advice is POST some PICTURES as they tell a thousand words.

Clopay is good brand along with Overhead Door. Friend of mine's dad worked at Overhead Door in Grand Island, NE and their quality is excellent.

Check Craigslist. I got a 16 x 8 insulated door with the tracks and an opener for $150. You might catch someone converting a garage into living quarters (none of us here would do that!)
