New garage floor.

I have a 23x23 foot brand new garage. House was built last year 2017 and concrete is spotless.

I have previously done a U-coatit kit on another house (also new concrete) with good results. After 5 years it still looked decent.

I'm most likely going to get one of those armor clad kits that people have talked about. I know about power wash and etching concrete since I did my last garage with murtic acid. Never had any issues with peeling or hot tire. But I have a few questions.

Primer. Should I primer new concrete? What would be the major benefits be?

I plan on getting the 600sq ft Armor Clad kit Grey with Double the flaks 12lbs(if possible) and 2 part topcoat upgrade. Just curious about to primer or not.

Lastly, I plan on getting this 36" vinyl decal (see pic).

I plan on placing it under the clear topcoat. Any suggestions on how to do that?
I was thinking after sprinkling the flaks (keeping them away from the area I am placing the decal) that after the epoxy dries to touch I would then place the decal down and then the next day do the topcoat.

Hi,
We always, always suggest priming for a variety of reasons. Most important it seals the floor and prevents uneven absorption (and therefore uneven sheen). Priming also makes the floor much thicker since the 100% solids epoxy 'sits' on the floor instead of partially absorbing in.

As for a decal...caution on this. The topcoat is really not designed to adhere to vinyl and can delaminate and we have seen this happen. By using a decal you have now put something in-between the epoxy and topcoat and driving surface which can lead to a failure.

If you do want to use a decal plan it to use on an area that does NOT get driven on, as the topcoat could get hot-tire-peeled off the decal. We have seen this happen many times.

We personally like to supply special floor decals we can have made for you that stick ONTO the final floor. These are the exact same as they use in supermarkets on the floors which are very high traffic. These decals have integrated laminated clear polyurethane wear top layer and are non skid. We use them in firehouses all the time, and those are very hostile environments.

Third, there is a company that makes custom 'mesh' decals that are like fine screen material. You do your floor (keep the flecks away from the decal area), then apply clear epoxy and bed/nest the mesh onto the clear, and then topcoat over that. This way the decal is integrated into the floor and can't fail. If interested in this we can give you the info, contact us directly at below not via PM please.

Thank you for the response. I will definitely prime. I will skip the decal and get something simular to put up on the wall.

Great, decals, while great-looking, can cause problems down the road so we always like to guide accordingly as best we can.
