My wife said the only way I was going to get a new garage was to build her a house. We broke ground two days ago.

I get to have a four car with two 16' doors. 36' x 40'. The bad part is only a 9' ceiling, so I can't have a lift. That will have to wait until the "shop" is built. I'll try to get pics up soon. :bounce:

Sounds like it will be a great place.

Don't give up on lifts just yet. With scissor trusses, or rafters, you would have plenty of room. Check into it first.

I got my garage the same way. I am acting as builder/general contractor myself...everybody needs a hobby right? Broke ground late last year and finally got the framing and shingles done last week. Mine is sort of L-shaped 3.5-car (8 and 18 foot doors), 1150 square foot.

I am a little concerned about your plan for two 16 foot doors. Even if they are on the long wall, it seems a little narrow for 4 cars. If you only really plan 3 cars inside plus shop area I'd think about an 8 or 9 footer plus a 18 footer. For 4 cars, if that is your plan, it sure seems a more rectangular shape would suit you better....like 48 wide x 30 deep.

My house is pushed up high with first floor 3.5 ft above grade over a walkout basement, so with the garage floor at normal grade and the adjacent house with 9 ft ceiling, I have 12.5 ft ceilings in the garage.

Thanks for the input. Two 16' should work out okay. We had one 16' on our last our last house with about 4' on either side. That worked out pretty good for two large vehicles (Navigator and a Lightning). The only bad part is the two doors are only one foot a part, but I can live with that.

The doors are on the 40' wall and it is 36' deep. Scissor trusses are not an option because the theater room is located above. I am excited about getting it done though, and thanks for the advice.

About the shop. I should have said that the "shop" will come later. This is just a garage.

BTW where do you guys host your pictures at?

I have the same problem, may garage is 24x40, 9ft ceilings and I have been searching for a lift, I found a company on line and If you got the money the company is called American Pride that sells a 8'3" lift, 10000lbs, I copied and pasted the link below.

I called them. They quoted $3499 and free delivery this month. But.... one of their claimed benefits was that you could get delivery of it as long as the trcuker has the lift on the back. The guy I spoke to said there is still a kink in the system as it is still 8 foot tall and most companies still will not use the truck lift. So, maybe they will load in a truck (your truck) for you but then when it gets home, you need to get it down.

You can post your pics right directly from your computer without going thru a host. Down at the bottom under "additional options" where it says "Manage attachments", click on that, then click on "browse" when the secondary window pops up. Find where your pics are on the computer, double click the pic, (btw...I think it is 5 you can upload) do this 5 times, then click "upload pics". Your pictures will show up on here.
