I'm planning on building a 30x40x10or12 stick built garage . Any advice? Dos and donts. I planned on using 2x6 for walls. My wife likes the idea of using attic room trusses but for the price I don't think they are worth the money. Plus 8/12 roof would make it harder to roof.(metal) Anyway any advice would be great I live in southern il, out in the country. Thanks again

When stick building I always found it economical to build in increments divisible by 4 feet. So build either 28x40 or 32x40. Go 12 feet high or higher to allow for future installation of a lift. I have no regrets using attic trusses (28 ft span) with a 10/12 roof pitch. It won't be much different installing metal roofing on any steep pitch roof.

If you even slightly have an itch for an RV, go 16ft high and put a 14ft door on it. Nothing more aggravating than having an RV that is just a bit taller than your door or building will allow. Ask me how I know.

Put a double walk in door in mine, wide enough to get lawn tractor and snowblower through so I don't have to move any vehicles out or open the big doors. Bigger is always better and yeah when you get it all done you'll think of something else you wish you'd done.

The best advice imo is to figure out what type of concrete foundation you are going to have and start with that. Flooring would be next, with the framing being the 3rd order of business. Many people, myself included are hot to trot on the woodwork but the concrete is equally important.

I would highly recommend the attic trusses, for the extra price paid, the amount of dry storage square footage is very cheap comparatively. You are correct about an 8:12 being harder to roof. Screw a restraint ring into the top center and work with a full body harness. That way you don't have to worry about falling off.

All of the above plus; In floor radiant heat is my #1 suggestion and #2 is a dedicated 'dirty room' where you can weld, grind, paint, drill etc. I Have a full bathroom in my garage and use it nearly as much as the ones in the house.

I would definitely recommend attic style trusses!! I found the difference in cost for my shop (34 ft. span) to be fairly insignificant and you end up with a great overhead storage space. Suggest you take a look at my build thread that is for a masonry foundation, 2x6 stick build walls, attic trusses, and steel roof ..... not too different than what you are envisioning:

I have to agree with most of the others.
1. YES- go with attic truss, I did and wouldn't have it any other way.
2. Add bathroom with a shower. It is well worth it.
3. 12 foot or higher first floor is a must.
4. Go larger than you want, because later, you will still wish (down deep) that you would have went a little bigger.

Check out my thread and see what I did.

Good Luck and be sure to start a thread on your build.
