Hello,

So I ordered some of the lights discussed over in: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=5403664#post5403664

Fixture - http://www.beeslighting.com/product-p/lss2xt8use4803.htm

Bulb - http://www.beeslighting.com/product-p/t818w1200bixxdf50f1.htm

I have a 30' wide by 24' deep newly built garage that I will be putting these in. There are no windows in my building. I have 16 of the fixtures, 32 bulbs so 4500 LM per fixture that I am going to put up. I am thinking I am going to do 4 rows of 4 but I am wondering how close to the wall these should go, to make sure I don't have any dark areas, and the distance between fixtures. Any suggestions?

I usually see the pro advisers say to keep lighting 3-4 feet away from the walls...
One question they always ask is what the ceiling height is to help calculate lumen dissipation or something technical like that...

Of course a lot depends on what you're going to use your garage for, storage, hobbying, painting etc... Where your workbench is located, where your cars/garage doors & openers are etc... I assume the lack of this info is why no one has replied yet. I'll throw out my .02 though.

I'm sure you've seen Platonic's awesome compilation of schematics... http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=289441
lots of combo's for all different size garages in case you haven't seen it!

Hello,

Thanks for the response. It has 12' ceilings and open walls. The primary purpose will be for car work and metal/welding hobby. So there will be a lift to the far right side of the garage (bottom of your picture) and benches to the far left. The center area will just be a bit of open work space for a welding table on wheels, etc.

I was mostly wondering about fixture distance and how close to the walls to go. On the top part of your drawing (far left) I am probably going to add a loft area so that will change how I do that last row of lights for sure. Thanks for the response and I will go check out the thread you linked.

That's very bright lighting. Hard to say if its too much. I just upgraded to T5's and this pic is with 16 T5 bulbs in my 24x30 garage..I know I would like to add 4 more T5's on "blue" wall when painting in garage.

The OP said he had 16 lights and didn't want any dark spots or shadows... I just equally spaced them out for that purpose...

I would do 3 rows of 4 and put an extra light over your welding area and along the wall where your work benches will be...
I can only picture it in my head since I'm not there and have no visual referrence... but maybe something like this?

12' should be fine as far as what I've read from the lighting guru's, The 4' tubes are usually fine from 8'-14" (I THINK)... So mounting them bellow the loft area should be fine also.
As far as reflection and maximum light per area it also depends on the type and color of walls/ceiling/floor combo you plan on putting in...

Only sharing what I've read from all of the lighting posts on here, not a pro by any means!

That 3 row lighting is likely perfect!
I do have a 4 bulb T8 light over work bench similar layout to yours however its on a separate switch and is rarely used. I usually work in middle of garage and push project against wall if something else has to roll in.

This is a little garage, move weld table to the wall. Depending on some other factrs what I might be tempted to do is run a pipe up from the recepts and another 4x4 box for switches, go to a couple recepts and cord and plug it all. Put a 4x4 in the ceiling and connect all the lights that reach and slip another switch wire up if I needed it or as it changed.
