One day a few weeks ago, I came home to this:

With that I decided to beef the attic floor up, raising the garage ceiling in the process. The addition of some 3.5"x14"x30' Beams, and some 2.5"x12"x18' i-Joists. The beams are going to have a column centered on the garage walls.

This is a rough layout of the garage, showing the approximate location of the beams.

The area between the beams is 12' ceiling height now. Outside of the beams, going to the existing walls ends up at 9' ceiling height. I'm going to keep the angle I think. The ceiling is going to be finished in Galvanized Durapanel Pole Barn Siding. I'm thinking of running 4 lights on the angled ceiling front and back of the garage, likely hanging, or mounting them in such a way that they point down, and a set of 3 lights centered between the parking bays, and either side of the parking bays, reevaluating needs once I have new benches built. I'd like to go Fluorescent lights to keep costs down for now, I've got a lot yet to do to finish things. What is my best bang for the buck currently for this? And are my thoughts on the lighting layout sound?

your better off with leds in my opinion as well because after you buy a fixture and lamps plus some spares you will be just a few dollars away from an affordable led.

I'm going to grab 20 4 light T8 fixtures tonight. That should do it I think.

When you say you want the biggest bang in lighting for your buck, are you talking about life cycle costs, including energy, or acquisition costs for the lighting equipment?

IMHO, LED lighting will give you the lowest life cycle cost when you factor in electricity and maintainance.

On the other hand, fluorescent fixtures and lamps from Craig's List are often found in the FREE section will be cheap to obtain, but will eat your lunch in power and maintenance.

My advice is guaranteed to be worth exactly what you paid for it.

The car is actually a Camaro. It ***** but it's not that bad. It's been my budget build for seven years now.

King Chevy, I don't know what the gold bar comment meant, doubtful anything worth my consideration.

Nadagail, I got the lights of of Craigslist. They are trigger style, 4 light T8 fixtures. 20 of them. I'm getting bulbs for $0.50 each. 160 of them. Should be a pretty good bang.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys.

After hours of reading I went with LED and installed them last week. I have a 24'x46' garage and I put in 28 LED fixtures at $30 each.

Pros:
Light weight fixture
Can link 8 together if the first 2 are hardwired
Each has a pull chain switch
Don't have to buy a fixture and bulb separate
Bright
Low energy usage
Can wack them by accident and bulbs are plastic
50,000 hour life
$30 for the whole 4' light
3,700 lumen output
Fast install (took me 6 hours to put up 28)
SILENT no buzz or hum at all

Cons:
None
