new garage, needs insulation

I Just had a new 16x22 garage (2x4 construction) built on my property. It is uninsulated and started thinking of getting it insulated. only problem is, Im a little dumbfounded on the cost of insulating it. I'd even do all the work myself. It seems it will still cost me close to $3000.00 to buy all of the insulation. Does that sound right?

Nope...your estimate is pretty high...I insulated one wall in my shop (it seperates the heated and unheated portion)....it's 20' long...8' high...cost $42.00 for the unfaced R-11 fiberglass (you will probably want kraft paper faced fiberglass)....figuring you have about 76' of wall...less 8' for a overhead door...that's somewhere around $125.00 for the walls...now if you put in a ceiling (nailed to the joists) THAT, in a R-19 unfaced, might be another $100.00 or so...just my guess...not too bad...

I think your probably looking at the rolls and mistaking them as being 1.
If you look on the package,you will see how many batts you get,some say 9 & some say 11. The batts are are one piece so 9 batts will do 9 sections on your wall. I think that's where the confusion is?

Aha!! WHew! I'll have to go and recheck because I was thinking that this was getting rediculous. Im sure I was probably looking at multiple batts then. I think price as around $50 for what I had thought was one.

I just checked again, and your're right, it is (depending one which R factor) from 8-12 pieces per roll. What a relief!

check with some insulation contracters, I'm having my garage insulated in a week or two(1600 sq. ft. with mostly 10 ft ceilings,R19/30) estimates from 1400-1800 dollars, about the same as buying the junk and no itching!

I have been checking between HomeDepot and Lowes for insulation in my garage and while I like Owings/corning(HomeDepot), I found Lowes to have a pretty nice insulation with better vapor barrier. Lowes is plastic vapor barrier on both sides and it's better to work with(lower amount of fibreglass exposed) but a little more money.
For me I will be going that route because I don't want to regret it after.
I think it's called "capsulated" comes in r-13 and r-19 only but don't quote me on that. I will know more when I actually buy it and open it up to install.

Agreed. Insulation is messy. You'll be itching for a week.

Wow, it's not that way around here. I called two places for quotes on insulating just the ceiling in my 28 x 48 garage, and both were over $1000. The vapor barrier & sheetrock are already up, soffit vents are in, so all they would have to do is blow it in.

I already did the 2x6 x10' walls myself. The R19 unfaced rolls and poly ran me about $350. And according to my figures I can do the ceiling to R30 myself for about $600 with fiberglass (+ blower rental) or about $350 for cellulose (blower included). Right now the plan is to do cellulose, but it'll be a couple more weeks before I actually get around to it. So all in all, I should have around $700 into insulation.

I'm usually pretty faithful to Home Depot, so I'll likely just get the fiberglass r13 w/vapor barrier for the walls, and r19 for ceiling. Probably just do the ceiling this winter, do the walls in summer or spring.

Vapor barier on both sides I'm not really sure what application would warrant using that......but......insulation has to breathe and if there is a plastic barrier on both sides I would think that moisture would trap itself in there.

And I could be wrong here... but how would that insulate well if the insulation is trapped between the two if no air can get at it.

I used the encapsulated insulation on my garage walls and it was explained to me that by enclosing the insulation on all sides the remaining air in the walls would evaporate what little condesation occurs through the vents. Since it's inside the walls I have not the slightest idea if it works but I am into my fourth winter and the wallboard is still tight and strong.

I just purchased r13 for the walls & r30 for the ceiling from Lowes for a 24x36 garage & it cost me around $800.00. They were running a rebate so i got $225.00 of that back.
