New garage, new work bench.

My brother moved into a new house. It has a 2 car & 1 car garage. The 1 car will be where the bench goes along the back wall. The space is a few inches over 12' long, so we built a 12' long bench. The top is made up of 2"x 8" SYP ripped in half and glued up. We figure the top weighs over 250 pounds. The only 1x lumber is the backstop. It is about 8" tall. Did you mean something else?

Glad you enjoyed it. Growing up my brother and I fought all the time . We have been doing projects together for over 25 years now and we work very well together. Whoever is the more knowledgeable on the subject takes the lead and the other backs him up.

Great design using the plywood panels to triangulate, stiffen and keep the framing sizes down. I've designed a bench just like that. Didn't build it yet.

Thanks for noticing that. I've seen many benches with more lumber still loose. This was a major goal of mine when I drew up the plans for the base. You need to go ahead and start on yours.

Here is the design I had.

All the surfaces provided rigidity.

Mass would be provided by things stored in it.

Mass could also be quickly gotten with multiple plys of plywood for a top. I saw a local ad for 1" thick utility grade plywood cheap. 3 plys and a hardboard wear surface.
