Hi,

So I managed to buy a 5 car garage that happens to have a house. My wife would say we bought a house that happened to have 5 garages.

Anyway, I am a bit overwhelmed. The house is under renovations & the setup is a main house with 2 car garage, and an accessory building with a 3 car garage.

The 2 car garage is our 'family' garage, the 3 car garage is 'mine' off-limits to everyone (bahh stay out!).

I have 2 children & a bunch of outdoor toys.

I think I need some type of shelving. I had purchased two Uline wire mesh shelves for my last house but I need more. They were about 300 per unit. I was hoping to get many more shelves for all 5 garages without breaking the bank.

I cleared an area outside next to my 3 car garage (the gravel) so that the kids would have somewhere to put their toys & powerwheels, etc. I have visions of putting a shed so that the junk is kept to a minimum but I am not sure if that would make it an eyesore.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Rich

Craigslist for the shelving or a home reuse store. You can get some good deals but you have to keep looking.

Depending on what you are storing, lateral files can be a better solution than open shelves. Think portable power tools, blow mold Boxes, etc...

Every so often you can find them free, (company closings and the like) or at least dirt cheap.

Is there some general rule of thumb people use for garage organization? Any writeups on things I could do to maximize space? Or just something cool?

Rolling adjustable shelving on tracks. Way more storage space than regular shelving. Tore out most of the shelving in a 2 bay, replaced with 6 of these (one end against wall, other end covered with pegboard, (17 feet of pegboard 8 feet high). Gained almost a full bay of space. (Pic shows 1 rivet shelf supports, mine have two rivets, heavier shelving).
