Howdy--I'm new to the forum and this is my 1st post.
We're finally in place to get a garage after going 16 years with no garage. Anxious to do this right and hope to get some guidance from the forum.
We have a few wooded acres so the building size and siting, set-backs, etc. are not an issue. The optimum location for the garage would support a 30' w x up to 36' deep x 9 or `10' sidewall building with a concrete floor. It makes the most sense for the structure to be detached--probably with a covered walk way to the house. because of budget and availability of builders, this will be a pole frame type of construction.
Inside, we need to park 2 daily driver vehicles, a compact utility tractor, and have space for a 3rd seasonal / project vehicle, yard/property maintenance stuff, small area for basic vehicle maintenance, bicycles and all the normal **** that accumulates. I have a separate basement hobby wood shop so I'm not planning on shop space.
Questions:
1. I'm, looking at 2 types structure: wooden post/frame (with steel roof, siding, etc.) ) or steel frame (with steel roof, siding, etc.) Does anyone have experience with either type that would suggest 1 is better than the other? One advantage to post/frame is they can start quickly, no footing and I can have the floor poured later. For the steel frame--the slab and footing need to go in 1st which delays the stat of the project until April or may
2. I'll do the interior build out-- does one building type lend itself to making it easier to build out insulation, power and interior walls.
3. I was looking for ways to make the garage look complimentary to the style of the adjacent house, including 24" or 36" wide overhangs (which all the builders can do) and using horizontal siding which is rare around here --some builders just don't do it and others have said they could but they seem reluctant.
4. If there is anyone in my region (central Kenosha county, Wisconsin--neighboring towns include Lake Geneva, Burlington, Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin or Antioch, IL) and have experience with any building contractors, I'd like to PM you and maybe pick your brain about your experiences--good or bad.
