New garage project - need some help

Hi all,

Sorry in advance for the long post.

My wife and I recently got married and bought a house about 3 months ago. We've done a lot of work inside the house but now that the wife is happy, I get to have some fun with the garage.

Not having the greatest foresight in the world, I started rebuilding my 1992 Kawasaki ZX7. Now that I've got half the bike ripped open I'm starting to think:

1. hey it'd be nice to have a sand blaster to clean some of these old parts

2. oh wait that means I'll need an air compressor

3. and hey since I'll have an air compressor I could get a powder coating gun

4. if I'm gonna spend so much money on all that kit, it makes all the sense in the world to get a $20 used electric oven

5. it'd sure be nice to have a neat garage to put all this kit in

So now I've got a half-assembled bike in the garage along with a bunch of junk left over from moving in. I don't have a shed or anything to temporarily hold all the stuff in the garage and I'd REALLY prefer not to leave either of my bikes outside (especially the half-assembled one). Any ideas?

I'm thinking of renting a moving truck for a weekend and just powering through the floors, baseboards, walls, and possibly electrical in a weekend. Is that realistic?

I'm not entirely sure of which materials to use for the floors. I think in my situation RaceDeck would be the most realistic (quickest)... but I'm REALLY worried about oil and degrease and brake fluid leaking through the tiles and doing god knows what to the concrete beneath over time. And what about dust from powder coating, sand blasting and simple mill work? I do quite a bit of bike work for myself and my buddies so having a durable floor is really important.

Here's some pics of my garage. Just simple concrete for now:

Here's a diagram of my garage thats fairly accurate. The entrance to the garage is represented by the blue line near the bottom of the image. The top of the image is where my two garage doors sit. Each square is a square foot.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yup, go the epoxy route.

I can relate to your line of thinking, since I have this I might as well get that, and since I'm that far I should take the next step and get that other thing, or two of them, also. Go through that process a few times and you end up with a garage where the floor coating doesn't matter since you can't find the floor any more.

Nice bikes man!

I don't regret my racedeck choice, but the epoxy is sweet too. But I knew I wasn't willing to do all that work or gain the skill to do the epoxy right though.

If you settle on the racedeck, I'd consider doing the tiles in 2x2 sections so that it isn't too busy. That's just personal preference. I also really like having the border, but mine is in a 3-car garage.

Good luck with whavever you choose.

Legacy & Alpha:
If I heat my garage up to ~70 can I do the epoxy installation even if its cold out?

What about a long weekend installation? Is that enough time? I'll clean and etch on saturday, do the epoxy on sunday, and move everything back on monday. I've read posts where some people wait several days for things to dry/set while others wait just one. Does it depend on the epoxy?

The streetbike is a 1999 YZF600R Thundercat. It's my first streetbike and it's a lot of fun. Just put some new gears in the ****** and a shift kit for a little project. Good times!
