I am preparing to build a 24 x 30 garage. I am planning to get cabinets for the back wall to tools (skill saw, drill, etc) out of site. Not sure to get floor cabinets or hanging cabinets or combo. Looking for some guidance based on experience. Garage will be 24' deep and calculated my Chevy truck is at least 17' long. I want to maximize my space and have it be functional as well.
Thanks, Joe

One suggestion would be to use tall wall cabinets 18" deep instead of the usual 20 to 24". The deeper cabinets not only take up more of your 24' deep garage but the things you put on back of the shelves tend to be forgotten since you can't easily see them with all the stuff stocked in front of them. If you have the space, you also might consider floor cabinets 7 to 8' tall. That would be like using base and wall cabinets but they would be continuous without the work surface space between. IMO, if you have more work surfaces than you really need, they tend to always be covered with **** that should be stored someplace else.

I built the same size- Found some old kitchen cabinets that had junk sides but good hardwood faces/doors. Took the faces, built my own boxes 16 inches deep and mounted them at 6 foot from floor to keep the full depth as I store the better half's Miata sideways along the back wall. Cheap and easy.

24 deep by 30 wide. Single or double occupancy? If you've only got the truck to go in and not another vehicle, I would concentrate your cabinets/bench along one side rather than the back, or work into the corner with a bench/cabinets.

if i was to add cabinets for storage (in the garage) of woodworking type power tools i probably use an overhead cabinet rather than a floor cabinet to keep floor space clear.

personally, i keep those kinds of tools in the basement where i use them most often.....

if i was looking for new cabinets, ive bought a few from menards on clearance.

around here, menards seems to have the best "in stock" variety

YMMV

Just finishing a 25x34. I made 12'eves
I put a 14x25 mezzanine in it for storage.
I am happy with it. Around 350 sq.ft. of overhead room to use as ???
12' eve's let me put in a 10x10 south facing all glass door.
6 2x10 skylights light it up,

Buy used wall cabinets and floor cabinets. Arrange them as you see best in the beginning. Then observe how it changes over the years. It will change - it will constantly change.
Wait until you get in it and move all your stuff in it to plan how you will use the space. And understand that your stuff will grow exponentially now that you have a new space.
You can't plan effectively based solely on measurements.
Once you figure out the ultimate plan - it will change in a few years. So don't sweat it on a building that isn't even up yet.

I would say 24' deep is not enough for benches and a truck. I have a 28'x30' and I consider it merely ok.

I have two Subaru foresters which are by no means long vehicles but there is sufficient room to pull in, get in the back and walk between the front and benches. You need at least 3' to move at each end IMHO

17' + 3' + 3' + 2' (bench depth) = 25'. Then remember 6" on both front and back wall for wall thickness so 26' min.

24 foot depth with a full size truck does not allow any room to work and walk around it.

Park your truck in the driveway and lay out the wall space on the ground and walk around all sides of the truck. You will collect extra stuff for the new space as shown above.

I would go 30' depth. In case you have a crew cab truck. You would have room to walk around it. As far as width goes go with at least 30'.
