My wife and I are moving to a new to us place in about month and will need to build a new garage/shop for me. The house is a 1960’s brick ranch with a two car attached. We are wanting to build a 24x32ish building for my car hobby and to be base to work on home improvement projects. The lot is 200x200 and we will have to take out some trees. We already have the preliminary ok with the city zoning board. We have a pretty limited budget of about $13k for the project. We’d like to get the concrete work done and get the shell of the building up for that amount and then add electrical, gas heat, and insulation over time. We’d like to hear the pluses and minuses of the typical building types. Conventional stick built, pole building, steel. As of right now we are leaning toward the steel building on a slab because it looks like it is the lower cost option. It is unlikely we will but up the building ourselves because we don’t have the time and probably can’t get enough people together to help. We are in north east Indiana if it makes any difference.

Joe,
I've kind of got the same problem in Northcentral Iowa. Prices very wildly from one contractor to another. I'm looking at a 28 x 28 stick built on a slab with a rat wall foundation. I talked to 3 different contractors until I found one willing to work with me and meet my price of $15 K for the concete and building that has a good reputation. Shop around, do your homework and you will find what you are looking for.
Good luck,
Jon
