65' Stude. New Project. Code Name "Red Devil" Pictures added 3/6/12

If all goes well today. I may have a new car to park in our new garage whenever the deal finalizes. The car is a 65 Stude. Runs and drives and the price is right.

Just know that I currently am  over the potential of this car. Pictures and info to follow.

I know that it has a 283, 4dr, new wiring harness, needs floors, has new master cylinder (needs to be installed), PO put some money into it and moved on to other toys. Been in a garage since and has been run regularly since.

:3gears:

i hate to say too much as well until its on my trailer, another stude yay!;)

When I told the wife that I was buying a car... I just told her details and never the price. She freaked out because we are buying a house and have a little one on the way. Then I told her the price and all was forgiven :lol_hitti It was worth the freak out!

That could turn into a real nice DD......

Thats the hope! We have been getting by the last year with only one car. It has really helped us save money for our house. Now we are thinking we may need the second car with two kids, so this may make perfect sense! I will have my cousin-in-law weld in some anchors so that a Car-Seat can be tied down in the back and AWAY WE GO!

Tell the PO that you want to carry your family in it as a DD, and closely watch his expression. His reaction may tell you how much fixin' you're in for. Please post pictures ASAP.

should be heading over to look at the car soon! Stoked is an understatement. We went and looked at our new house yesterday during the inspection... The garage will be perfect for the car. Just right size-wise.

its home! sorry I dont have pictures. Went over when it was dark. Brought it home. Wife is a bit ticked about me bringing it home without talking to her. You win some, you lose some. Hopefully, she will come around and forgive me for this one.

When I first went to test drive, it took a while to stop. We added some brake fluid and pumped em good. Wasn't a problem after that... definitely pulls right. Just had to work with them to get them to stick. They will be the first item looked at it besides the clean up. It came with a bunch of new brake parts.

The temp gauge is reading hot, but we never had any issues. It also never moved while I was driving. May need a new t-stat? what would be the correct t-stat to use?

Also noticed that the gas gauge wasn't working. Added 6 gallons and it never registered.

The trunk lid sits high for some reason and is missing the lock. May need a new lid. Trunk itself looked good. Some holes here n there. Nothing drastic.

The wiring was professionally gone through. The carb was tuned at the same time and a manual choke added. Dash lights were slow to come on but eventually did kick on.

It is the original engine I assume. It even has the Thunderbolt stickers on the valve covers. Only iffy part of the engine bay that I noticed, was the "bungee-cord" tie down. It will be replaced as soon as I can get my hands on a new legit one.

I hope to bust out the buffer's soon to NuFinish the car. It does have the original hubcaps still and thin whites!

I'm going to sand down a few areas and prime/paint them to get rid of the surface rust. Roof I think has the most rust, but mostly surface as far as I can tell.

I will try to get pics tomorrow when it is light out.

She's rough, but mine. Project "Red Devil" is a go.. (The name is still tentative. The Car is red on red, hence the name)

Hey, a little mild buffing on the paint, some ArmorAll for the dash, some STP for the engine, and it'll be right as rain! (At least, that's the song you should be singing to the wife. lol Maybe you should also give her flowers, chocolate, and jewelry just to make amends for jumping on that old Stude' without her blessing.)

My father once bought a car without talking to mom first. He didn't hear the end of it till he sold the car. It's still not a good idea to bring that car up to this day and that was 20+ years ago. Hope you have better luck than my father. :)

Cool car. So what did it run you?

My dad did that once, my mother complained about it for the next 50 years. :)

I bought a 67 Mustang in 1985 after just 2 years of marriage. I was over my head with this car as I had no place to work on it and it became a constant source of tension. Traded it less than 2 years later for a motorcycle, which was a good thing at the time. To this day, my wife cringes at the thought of me getting another project, usually reminds me not to "Mustang her"... Thank goodness almost every project has been good. Though, that 1980 Audi 4000 I bought in 1990 was a close second to that Mustang. (for the record, I had had 2 65s and 72 Mustang before that, and could EASILY fix that 67 today...)

She calmed down pretty quick. It just caught her off guard. She is looking forward to going for a ride once I get it cleaned up and ready. I did try buffing out a small corner Thursday night just to see if it would clean up.... I could almost see myself!

I did find out that it is the original engine from the owner who had it before the PO.

I'm as pissed as your wife.
:headscrat pissed that I didnt bring it over to your house?

haha I think that I will be better off. She calmed down by morning. She told me to get it. Just wasn't ready for me to bring it home.

$1.00 :D

I love your avatar...

Thanks. Big Jerry Reed fan.

Hi, nice find. Is that a studebaker motor? My dad had a 63 avanti for 7-8 years when I was in my teens (late 70's) It had a 289. real studebakers have the best sounding pipes I have ever heard. The avanti was quiet cruising, but really sweet when you get on it. I would highly recomend some avanti mufflers for yours. They are still available. I was going to get some for an old chevy truck I was fixing up, and called the company up and the guy asked what I was getting it for and I told him. He said I could do what I wanted, but the sound was not the type of mufflers, but it came from the engine, and that no other v-8 sounded like em. Ended up not getting it. Dad offered to sell it to me cheap when he got rid of it, but I was into porsches. I still regret that decision, what an idiot.

It has a SBC 283. In 65-66 you could either get the 283 or 235(i think). They were produced at the McKinnon Plant in Canada, which is where the Studes were last made. My uncle's wagon (see blog in sig) still has the 259 Stude v8. Hope to have it running this summer.

Wait.......What??????
You read correctly. The guy wanted his son's project car out of his garage where it had sat for over a year. The kid bought it as a project then lost interest from what I can tell. So now it's mine...and the car payment was $1. Bank almost wouldnt finance me :lol_hitti :D

:lol_hitti Do what I can. To say I was excited, is an understatement. I was giddy. Now I am excited for the weather to clear up enough so that I can work on it!

You realize, of course, that we want a DETAILED build thread.

As soon as I start building, You will! I am already planning on starting another blog. Since I have one for the wagon (which I hope to update soon), I figure the Commander needs one as well. :rocker:

Thanks. I'm Working on it. I will probably end up doing the roof in the same color as the wheels. I want it running reliably and all before I worry about the body though. My goal is paint by Thanksgiving. Going with an inexpensive Maaco job. This isn't going to be some fancy restoration. Just a reliable daily driver. The wagon will get the full treatment over time.
