I just became a member and wanted to introduce myself. I've been into old cars for a while, but in the last few years I have not been able to have a shop. Well that is a story of the past. I now have a house and garage in DC and I am ready to build out my shop. I have two old cars. One 1966 Bronco that is stored in Kansas City and I also have a 1970 Challenger that is stored in Albuquerque. Both have been in storage because I didn't have a shop. I have been chomping at the bit to get my shop up and operational. My house has a small 2 story carriage house behind it that has interior dimensions of about 18'x12, so not very big. I decided since the Bronco is smaller, I will bring it out to DC. It needs a complete restoration, so my shop is not just for protection of my pretty car. I'm going to pick up the Bronco in early spring, so I have a timeline for the shop to get done. It will need to be functional and durable, since I am going to spend a lot of time in there. I started a thread for my build in the Garage Gallery named "2-story carriage house to auto hobby shop". Right now the carriage house is just a brick building, with a leaky roof. The structure is basically good, but I want to make a couple of "improvements" to the doors. I will be adding a rollup door to the back alley side of the building, and fabricate/install a hanger style door at the yard side. If you are not familiar with DC row homes, I'll give you the run down. They are in a row......the two sides of my garage **** up to the neighbors, the front opens to my yard, and the back opens to an alley. I came from a place where yards are huge and garages have old cars parked all around them. I will not be blessed with that dream here.
I work for a large general contractor in DC, so I have access to resources that most do not in terms of "friends" willing to help me if needed. HVAC and electrical are probably the main things I will get help on. Other than that, I will be asking a lot of questions and getting ideas from GJ for space saving and organization of my garage.
I'm very excited to finally be building my shop
By the way my name is Ben
Here are a couple of pics of the space from my thread:
