I am in the process of planning a 24 x 36 garage. Looking to put in a lift. Does an 11 ft. ceiling sound right? I plan on contracting out the slab, framing and roof. After that I hope to finish the rest myself.
I am in Brookhaven town and will have to go for a variance for the oversized garage. I do have a rear yard 75 x 100, clear and flat. Anyone have experience with the town?

Stroker 69,

The types of cars you are putting on the lift should dictate the size of your garage’s ceiling height. If you are parking exotics (which have very low profiles) on the lift then 11 to 12 feet is enough. If you are parking Muscle cars, hot rods, vintage trucks or classic cars then you may want to build a ceiling height that goes up to 15 or 20 feet. If you don’t have any of the above yet then build for the future (meaning 15 to 20 feet) so you don’t limit your storage capabilities.

Width between cars is also important. When building a garage from the ground up, we usually try to get our clients to allow 6 to 8 feet between cars so the doors can be opened without hitting the car next to it by accident. Again, older classic cars have LONG doors (especially the coups) so they are very susceptible to door related accidents and damage in tight garages. This can get expensive if you don’t prepare your garage for it.
