I just ran across this forum, I think it was from a reddit post or something. Either way, I was immediately blown away by both the garages and their contents on this site. I think it was perfect timing, because I'm just about to acquire my first home, closing on Friday. It has a two car detached garage, which should be big enough for me to work on my car and maybe get into another hobby like woodworking.

Right now the garage is pretty bare, no insulation and poor lighting. Also, the concrete has a large oil stain on it. I would like to properly insulate the walls/ceiling, install some gypsum, light it up and finish the floor. Also, the house needs work so it has higher priority for the moment. That being said the house will needs some minor drywall work, so I might use the garage as opportunity to hone my skills.

Anyway, I just wanted to introduce my self and hopefully I can start a build thread in the following months.

Welcome to GJ and congrats on your new home and garage. You'll find info on here on everything from simple working garages to show places - most of us like the former.

Greetings from Illinois. Welcome to GJ. This forum + your $ = dreams come true. I'm sure your house and garage will turn out great. Just be sure to try to have fun working on them. BTW: A fully equipped woodworking shop takes up a lot of space. Woodworking is located in my basement, while the "dirtier" and vehicular hobbies live in the garage. Have fun and do what works out best for you.

I've learned as much from my father's garage, he had both the woodworking and cars in the detached. Either the sawdust was causing a mess or cars were causing a mess. Right now, I mostly just need to learn the skills, so I'll probably be attending classes at some of the local shops.

Anyway, a little more about myself, I'm 27 and right now my car is a 2010 Subaru STI. I have aspirations of getting into grassroots racing, so I've started attending HPDE events. I do modify my car, but the modifications are mostly for track prep rather than making gobs of power. IMO the car is still faster than my capabilities as a driver, so go fast bits will take a back seat till I am ready.

Closed on the house yesterday, making a plan for house repairs and improvements. I noticed that the oil stain is even larger. What is the best way for removing a dirty old oil stain?

Might try making a paste from Tide.....the powder. Apply and let it sit for a while. I'm sure you will get some better answers. And welcome to GJ.....from another Buckeye!
