Hi, new guy here, moved into new home and shop floor had been painted, it flakes off and comes up, but I was thinking of renting a floor sander like for gym floors and sand it off before I lay down some new paint, or my race deck or combo.

any ideas on stripping floor? tried to locate sand blaster no luck.

Is it paint or is it epoxy???

The harder it is, generally the easier it is to GRIND off. Some thick gooey paints can be a real bi-otch. Take a screw driver and 'scraping' at the floor does it chip and flake up (meaning hard and brittle GOOD NEWS) or just mar the surface?

If you have a gooey paint, a chemical stripper may be a better time/money choice. There are mastic/paint removing heads for grinders but I would bet there are VERY FEW places that rent those. Grinding with a standard diamond cup wheel can take as much as 10x as long with a sticky paint. :shocking:

ANY choice is NOT SUPER easy. The best case scenario is the Box Store DIY kits. They will generally grind up almost as easy as just grind prepping the floor with no coating.

Good luck, Best bet for you is to recruit the help of some buddies and a couple cases of beer!

I just finished this and I rented a floor grinder that had 4 carbide pads on it. It also had the ability to use water while grinding. The pads were quite used and therefore did an OK job but I think it would have turned out better if I had known better and asked for new pads when I rented the grinder. I had to finish up with my 7" grinder using silicon carbide disks from Harbor Freight. I had to knock the center hub out of the disks and they also worked ok. Hell a lot of work!
