New guy here. Overwhelmed on where to start!

Hey all. I’ve had a great garage for many years but a new (future) home purchase will likely dictate the building of a new garage. But I’m having trouble getting a handle on how to start the process, especially trying to get a vague idea of what garage building costs would be. I’m even happy to get VERY vague answers. I’d hate to buy online garage plans (Assuming that might be a start) only to find out it is way out of my budget. Where does one start?

Anyway, I look forward to searching the forum and participating officially now.

I'd suggest that you start a new thread in the general forum as not many are going to see this in the introductions subforum. That said your first step is before buy a new place is to see if you can build on that property. There are a lot of restrictions placed by HOA's, city rules,county rules, etc. So many threads here on people wanting to build only to be stopped by rules, right-of-ways and setbacks. There are truly some weird rules in place out there.

I have found that everything costs more than you are expecting. I find it hard to believe how much replacement costs have risen for what I have acquired over the years.

Craig's list has some real deals for those who have the time to chase them down. Just today I saw 30 rolls of free roofing paper for someone who is willing to dive the miles to get it.

Good advice posted so far. If you want to get some perspective on costs, Menards has plans/kits posted online.

Keep in mind, this is just the material for the garage shell. Additional costs like permits, site work, concrete, interior finishing, electrical/plumbing, and labor will also need to be factored in. Rough guess, I'd probably multiply whatever Menards lists as a price by 4 or 5 times to get a ballpark on a cost for a completed, finished space. Again, that is a rough guess. Those other costs will vary on your area.
