I keep coming here from Google finding ideas for my new garage space, so I figured it is time to register.

I collect tools, military trucks, love fabricating stuff, play with ham radio a lot, and have 23 years experience dealing with military trucks, I finally retired from the USAR as a CW3 last year.

I am already finding lots of good ideas and hope I can share some too.

Welcome!

I was on the other side of Balsam for a few years (Cullowhee/WCU). I love that neck of the woods.

So let's see the pictures of the garage and trucks!

Chief: stick around and i bet you'll learn a lot if you have the time to read some of the great threads. also a warning you might need to hold on to your wallet cause there are so many cool tools and garages and rigs that you might not again have $100 bill in your wallet that isn't already spent on something cool to add to your shop.

cheers and welcome to the forum

This place is the most vast knowledge base( for hands on) on the internet. Its welding web, practical machinist, lumberjocks, geek electronic ****, BBQ grillin' , gun shootin' all rolled into one.
Amazing really

Very nice.. I like the carport next to the garage! You've got a "drive-under" style like me.

Also, looks like there's some open space above the house with trees to fasten ham antennas to. :)

Chief: get the structural stuff and electrical done as soon as you can before you start putting your STUFF in there cause it's sooooo much harder to do later. that might only be a missing board above the opening of the big garage, but i've seen so many leaking and pest damaged decks like that in my years of selling homes that you need to make sure to repair or replace any damage or it won't be pretty the longer it doesn't get fixed. hopefully you don't have any damage and just need to put on or maintain the nice deck surface, but be watchful.

here's just a small example of the damage a leaking screw on my skylight over my deck caused cause the caulk failed.

other than that i can seriously say i'm jealous cause i love brick homes and big ones with huge garages and usable basements all the better.

good luck

I'm actually pretty lucky in that those boards around the opening to that big garage are purely decorative. It's a steel beam under and on each side. I plan to take the rest off, get the surface rust off, repaint and go from there.

That area was always left open and used as a carport, but I plan to add doors. I'm working now to figure out my best options on doors now.

Chief: i love the sound of STEEL BEAMS. are you going to park your cars inside there or use it as a shop? if using as a shop just a double wide man door might work great with one side always closed unless you need to open it to get big machines in there or put a single garage door in and wall up half of it to give you some extra wall space. can you put any sort of lift on the steel beams in case you need to lift something off a trailer inside your shop?

because it looks like you might have lower ceilings maybe doors that open side to side instead of a double man door if you want to park cars inside? just throwing out a few ideas and maybe it will work for you.

i was looking at your structural and wondering if you might want access from the wider garage to the basement garage and what that would take to open it up since it's a bearing wall with bricks on it.

Welcome to the GJ, Chief! I see you have an underground lair! Warm in the winter and cool in the summer! My two tips are: paint the walls and everything white, and lights, lights, and more lights! (LED for most stuff.)

Drivesitfar - that is why I consider skylights the debbil. The fewer chances for a roof to screw up, the better, I say.

Chief: one popular gateway drug to GJ is Jack Olsen's 12 Gauge Garage. The long thread:
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=55006

The website he built because it's easier for new people to get a handle on his small garage compared to spending weeks reading a thread:

I vote for some kind of big garage door for that carport, but please, make it insulated. It pays in the long run, and you have something like real winter up there. Well, if you're going to make it any kind of heated shop. Not that a warm garage isn't nice, too.

Also, if you have any problems with big bipedal apes running around in the dark, I'm here to answer any questions.

The side garage is going to be parking and a space to work, mostly unheated but I want to be able to heat it when needed. Thinking of barn style doors since the roof is pretty low and adding a garage door inside with really drop it too low. The other option I am looking at is the bi-fold hanagr type doors.
