Gents, new to the forum here as I have spent some time lurking in the shadows. Found that this site was a little bit more user friendly to garage guys than some of the previous sites that I have visited.

Live in TN, currently have a 2 care garage underneath my house attached to my basement. I am thinking of adding a detached garage in the near future. I am construction savvy and have a good bit of experience building structures. The issue is that my garage is a catch all wood shop, gym, parking area for my wife (my truck won't fit), metal shop, mechanics shop and storage area. Way too much going on in one two car garage.

I am also facing the problem that since finishing my basement, the building and codes department has informed me that I need to add an egress window to my finished basement of enclose my garage. I guess the two doors leading from my basement to the garage and the stairs leading upstairs don't count................ It would have been nice if the inspector told me that prior to building a home theater and a bar in the basement.

So with all that being said, I am kicking around the idea of building a detached garage that will hold my truck, serve as a mechanics area, gym and storage area. Then adding french doors in place of the garage doors on the current garage and making that my wood shop and carpentry area with some storage.

You get the idea...........

All in all, I would like to get as much feedback as possible in regards to building a new garage from scratch alone, or hiring a company to do it. I feel like I could save a great deal of $$$ by doing it myself, however that's why I am here.........to get ideas and weigh the options.

I am in the military, so my time is limited. hence why I am weighing the options.
