Most of the places I visit usually want the obligatory introduction from the new guy, so here goes.
My first garage came with the house we now live in. It's a double car attached which had nothing in it when we moved in. That soon changed and things began to evolve in a piece meal manner. Today it's in serious need of a revamping, so finding GJ was a few days ago was a very timely thing. I had ignored the inconvenient lay out for quite a while, but when I acquired a couple of small convertible sports cars that needed shelter, things got way out of hand, making it nearly impossible to function in the available space.
I'm now in the process of planning a remodel that should get me back in shape to work in there again.
The problem is the space houses 3 basic operations. I work as a sales manager/consultant for a very old world toy steam engine company, which led me to doing restorations for collectors around the world. This means one area houses a huge collection of spare antique parts, lots of miniature tools and a fairly compact work area.
As a hobby machinist, I also make my own miniature engines, so another area of the garage houses a couple of small lathes and mills, along with several tool boxes of tooling associated with that black art.
The recent arrival of the little cars means the rest of the garage is being used to park or work on one of the four Miatas that have accumulated within the extended family. I just added a Bend Pak Scissor mid lift and the required ramps which self stores beneath one of the cars.
In short, everything "fits" but its getting nigh onto impossible to move around, let alone get anything done effectively. My plans are to basically empty the place and then work things back in with a bit more organization, while keeping the budget within reason. That process began with buying the lift and will progress to a purchase of a pair of HF 56" boxes before the end of the year. This will allow me to consolidate a few of the smaller CM tool boxes that have accumulated over the years of haphazard evolution. Hopefully by spring, I'll have things moving in the right direction.
